Do boys aged 11 need to wear long trousers on all evenings or is a smart bermuda also ok?

I have seen children about that age being told they need long pants in suite and blu restaurants, not sure in mdr.

They should have no issues in the main dinning room. My dad wore shorts every night (even chic night) - now he is 80 so who was going to argue but nobody even questioned it.
