cell phone reception onboard

We are traveling on the Voyager the week of the 15th of March. There are several of us and we were thinking about our cell phones.

Do they work from cell to cell while on the ship? The ships have Wi-Fi but I'm not tecnically inclined so I don't know if they makes any difference with cell phones. We tried using walkie-talkies on the Conquest but so did everyone else on the ship.

It occurred to us that if you could talk cell to cell - we might just buy a couple of Tracfones (prepaid phones). They only cost about $9.99 each at Walmart.

Also wondering IF they do work - would international rates apply - I think even on a prepaid phone international is probably highter.

Thanks Karen

If the ship provides cell service, they will work cell to cell, the down side to that is the you are going through the ships cell provider and in addition to using minutes, you will be paying about $4 a minute per phone for the use of the ships cell tower. If you talk a lot you can buy a really high end set of family service radios for that.

Interesting - how do they collect the $4 charge? We have walkie-talkies good for up to 10 miles but it seems as though everyone on board has a set.

My reply was deleted. As stated above you are connecting through the ship's satellite connection, which is very expensive. THEY don't charge you - you get home and find a $300 cell phone bill in the mail. I have used my cell phone on occasion, but generally stick to e-mail.

Most people just "find" each other or prearrange and place and time to meet...and don't forget, they can leave voicemail at your cabin

I have three kids in college - I always have a $300 cell phone bill - ha! We were thinking of using prepaid phones.

Texting is the same thing as making a call. I called my cell phone provider to get all my questions answered PRIOR to our cruise. They told me that two out of 4 ports of call, we would be ok, HOWEVER the other two would be @ $6.99 per minute and texting is the same. He also told me if the phones are on and u get a text or vm, that would be a charge too. He said to avoid this, u must keep phones off until u get to a port of call that u will not be charged. I suggest that u call ur cell phone provider PRIOR to going and find out from the source instead of trying to guess, etc. Lynn
