I've just booked back-to-back cruises on the Century for August 2005. I've booked Sky Suite 1203. Thre will be three of us sharing the suite. Can anyone tell me anything about the Sky Suites? Does anyone know if I'll have to leave the ship at the end of the first cruise and reboard for the second cruise or will I be able to just stay on the ship? On the Zuiderdam this Spring, we had to leave the ship and reboard. Thanks for any information. Only 39 weeks and 6 days...not that I'm counting!

The Sky Suite is great. We were in 1202 and it was fantastic. We had plenty of room for our daughters crib and still room to move. The balconies are huge, while only about 50% covered you get the best of both worlds, covered when its raining, star gazing at night with NO obstacles. As for back to back, no getting off and reboarding. This used to be the case, I would call Celebrity just to make sure policies have not changed. Enjoy your cruise.

We were on back to back in September and did not have to get off the ship. You will get 2 sets of documents as Celebrity considers these 2 seperate cruises.

We took our documents for the second leg to the Guest Relations desk a couple of days before the end of the first cruise and they sent our new sea pass cards to our cabin the last night along with our onboard purchases credit card bill.

We went through Immigration the last morning of the first cruise along with the non US citizens and they had a special desk for those of us doing back to back. Very easy and smoothly done. I was surprised at how many cruisers stayed on!

For Customs, both cruises are considered 1 trip out of the country. You declare ALL purchases at the end of the 2 cruises. So watch your limits if paying duty is a concern. Of course, if you drink or smoke up what you bought you don't have to declare it!!

I am curious as to what you thought of the Zuiderdam. I see that you have recently returned and am curios as to your opinion. We were on the Century a couple months ago and it is FANTASTIC! I liked the size of the ship ,the service was terrific and the food was very good. The entertainment was the best we have experienced in a long time. You will enjoy it very much.

Well, viet, I'm sorry to say that I was so disappointed in the Zuiderdam. I read lots of great reviews before I went and maybe my expectations were too high. What they did well, they did very well, but what they did badly was awful. I've never had a bad cruise (how bad can a couple of weeks on a ship be???) but the Zuiderdam did not meet the standards of Celebrity and Princess.

The good - Shore excursions were well organized and fun. Their private island is fantastic. It is so beautiful and well taken care of. Their shows were fantastic, especially "Under the Boardwalk." They also had a fantastic juggler - he was hilarious - and a great magician. The Odyssey Restaurant was wonderful. The service we received there was what we are used to receiving in the main dining room on Princess and Celebrity. I have no complaints about the food in general. It was all good. The "coffee guy" as he called himself in the Lido buffet was wonderful. He was always cheerful and friendly.

The bad - Service was horrible, with the exception of our room steward the first week. He would slip in and out of our cabin and it was as if by magic the room was cleaned. We moved to a different cabin the second week and the steward barely cleaned it. Dirty glasses would sit for days. The staff at the front desk was not helpful at all. More often than not they would be chatting when people were standing in line with questions. If they didn't know the answer to a question, they made no attempt to find out the answer. Service in the dining room was non-existant. Part of the problem was that the waiters seemed to be waiting on more tables and just didn't have time to get it all done. Almost every night the wrong plate was placed in front of everyone. It got to be a joke at our table and we would just switch the plates around. On one of the formal nights they used saucers from the Lido buffet area along with the Rosenthal china cups. I thought this was pretty tacky. It was early in the week and they ran out of china saucers. We did back-to-back cruises and moved to a different table in the dining room for the second week. The service went downhill. Our waiter never smiled and was barely civil when taking our orders. The assistant waiter did his best and it didn't matter when we saw him during the day always had a pleasant word for us. We ate dinner in the Lido most of the second week and had terrific service.

The ship is only about 2 1/2 years old and is already showing lots of wear and tear. I thought it had just been in dry dock for repairs in Dec. of 2003. The walls in the atrium area were held together with duct tape. If they are holding the public spaces together with duct tape, what it going where we can't see? That made me a little nervous. There was plastic sheeting taped to the ceiling in the dining room. I've been on older ships than the Zuiderdam that were in better condition.

The hydrotherapy pool was nothing like the one on the Galaxy. It was small and dark and crowded. In fact the whole ship felt a little small and dark to me.

I wasn't travelling with any children so I really shouldn't comment on this, but their children's program seemed to be lacking. Every day about 10 children would take over the pool. They were running around the pool and crawling over a statue that was at one end of the pool. Unfortunately, their parents weren't supervising them and there didn't seem to be any HAL staff around either. I was worried that one of the children would fall and hurt themselves.

There was also lots of confusion about what we were supposed to do about reboarding for the second week. We were told to leave the ship, but no-one seemed to know what we should do beyond that. It was very disorganized.

I'm a very easy going person and usually don't complain, but this cruise was really a disappointment. We are really easy passengers. We don't ask for much and we know the crew works long, hard hours and I'm sure it's hard to them to always be cheerful. On past cruises we've made friends with waiters and other crew members. We like to talk to people from other countries and find out what life is like there. We also like to find out about their families. We've made several friends that we still keep in touch with. I guess I missed that "personal touch" on the Zuiderdam. I definitely won't sail on HAL's Vista Class ships again and I'm not even sure I'll sail with HAL again. I'll stick with Celebrity and Princess.

Thank you very much for your open and honest answers. I have a friend that just came back from the Zuiderdaam. This was his second trip with them and he said the last..His feeling's were that the service was so poor the last time because they had changed there tipping policy and the crew knew that they didn't have to perform and they still would get tipped because of the automatic gratuity policy. He said 2 years ago the service was much better. We have been on only 1 ship with automatic gratuity's and the service was very poor.I will try to avoid lines that have this policy. Thanks again, you have said everything that I have heard from others therefore I will avoid HAL.

These responses indicate my imagination was not working overtime. We sailed the Zuiderdam twice within a year. The difference in service between the first and second cruise was like night and day. Front desk was very inattentive and intrusive at times. Guest relations rep question my integrity.

Three couples traveling in suites and we had to play hardnose with them to honor our confirmed dinner time. When HAL did honor our seating time, we were placed behind a serving table with a surly wait staff and wine steward.

There are ways you can deal with these kind of issues. First, HAL makes the seating time part of their boarding contract. If the contract states your seating time is confirmed, you can play attorney with them. From all of the previously full tables, one opened up at our designated time. I guess HAL threw 6 people overboard.

When your service is lacking, go to the front desk and have the automatic gratuity charge removed. It is optional and at your discretion. The front desk will ask you why and you can tell them if you so choose including names if you want to be specific. Since most of the workers have served you well, you can give them a little extra.

Another approach which has been successful for us is to identify the staff which you will need the most and give them a few bucks up front. People like the room service breakfast server and the buffet table cleaner do not expect a tip. Leave them $1-2 and you become a member of their family.

vERY GOOD IDEAS. I LIKED YOUR RESPONSE. I am cosidering The Zuiderdam because it is a bargain compared to most of the other ships. But on the other hand if the service is lousy I would rather pay a couple hundred more and have a nice cruise.I have heard so many bad reports on the service lately that I don't know what to do.

We tried to have the tips removed from our account, but it turned into a big hassle. Because they pool the tips, we were told that if we removed the tips from our account and handed them to a crew member in person, that crew member would have to turn in the tip to be pooled with the rest. We wanted to tip our room steward extra because he was so wonderful, but didn't know what to do. We finally did hand him some extra cash and wether he reported it or not, I don't know. I would much rather pay a little extra and cruise on a nicer ship with better service.

By the way, I just got my reservation confirmation from my travel agent for my August 2005 cruise on the Century. Now I only have to get through the next 9 months!

The Zuiderdam front desk tried that baloney with us but it did not work. I am unconvinced HAL takes the gratuities and shares them with the service personnel according to their posted guidelines.

HAL is trying to convince their customers they are doing us a favor by automatically adding the gratuities to our final bill. I think their employees are at a disadvantage with this system and it may even affect the service which the employees render to us. How do we know our gratuities will be given to our designated servers in addition to their regular salary?

Not all servers are equal. When we have a server who is attentive and goes beyond normal expectations, we are going to tip them over and above the normal. I would hope the server would hold onto the money. In like manner, I am not going to tip someone who is not doing their job.

Remember: you are the customer; it is your call.
