How do you determine what & when to give?

For me, most of what I give is done by payroll deduction. I decide how much I can afford/am willing to give & have it deducted to the charity of my choice through the CFC(combined federal campaign)

I also buy girl scout cookies, popcorn from the girl scouts. I will usually buy candy from the different people at work for their childrens schools etc. I donate books & toys for the "needy" at christmas.

I donate my time to Big Brother/Big Sister. I also volunteer on some one time efforts(food drive)

I usually do not buy from the catalog fundraisers. Also, I have drawn the line at supporting peoples churches, and family reunions(there was a person selling WAY overpriced candy to fun their family reunion!) & I hate when people try to guilt me into supporting the cause they feel is most important!

I rarely if ever give money to people on the streets. I can't help wondering if it's a scam.(I would buy them food)

What do you do?

I prefer to give at church or to buy candy bars or cookies, etc.. I don't like it when the kids' teams just stand outside the supermarket 'begging' for cash. I will put some into the Salvation Army Bell Ringers' pots.

I give to the things that mean something to me...the childhood cancer fund and the organizations that help pets. You can't give to everyone so you should give to what organizations you believe in

It is so difficult because there are so many honorable and much needed charities. I look at it this way, I chose a couple, someone else chooses a couple and so on and hopefully we all can do what we can and spread it around.

Autism is one that is close to me. I have an autistic grandchild. And always the Salvation Army and breast cancer. Of course you get hit up for girl scout cookies and I sponsor that program because I was a girl scout right through leader way before Audra was old enough to be a Brownie. Whatever you do is great!

A couple of years ago when Target refused to allow the Salvation Army at their stores I was home doing last minute things with Audra. We were at Walmart and there was the bell ringer. I grabbed a few bucks out of my pocket, I had already donated at another store.

Audra young Mom of 4 children who doesn't have a ton of money grabbed a dollar out of her pocket. She put it in the kettle. Then she grabbed another dollar and said and that one is for the one you didn't get at Target. And then she grabbed another one and said and for all the other stores too! She had the bell ringer laughing that she was that put out by their policies of not allowing the bell ringers.

I thought to myself. I did pretty good. She doesn't have much but gave what she could.

Judy - well said. and Elliottsmama, too. There's no way to give to them all.

It's also good to give a quarter or 50 cents to those little cans in the convenience stores. Imagine if everyone did that how quickly it would add up.
