We cruised out of Galveston in June and we stayed at the Howard Johnson. It definitely wasn't fabulous, but we basically just needed a place to sleep. The location was also good as it is around a 3 minute drive to the cruise terminal from the hotel.
We stayed at the La quinta. They have 2 right on the water. Make sure you ask if its the newer one. Very nice and clean!! Good free waffle breakfast and free use of computers and internet. My brother we went with is a cheap-o so I dont think it was real pricey. Also had free parking and shuttle service.
I think the Howard Johnson was around 80 dollars - that was about the cheapest we found for that time of year (that we were willing to stay at). They had free breakfast and free parking and shuttle service. However, we elected to park at the terminal.
I think we got there a little before 11. We unloaded our stuff at the terminal and the guys went and parked the car and took the shuttle back. We were on the ship by about 12:15 or 12:30 and were able to get into our rooms right away so we could drop off our carry on luggage (our other luggage obviously wasn't there until a while later). I would recommend getting to the terminal around 11. It was so nice to be able to walk around and explore the ship before most of the other passengers boarded.
