Chemical Explosion in Des Moines

This photo was taken from my deck. I'd estimate the fire is about 15 miles away. There was an explosion at a cleaning solvent plant at about 1:30 CDT. They have I-80 and parts of I-35 closed. Looking for a major traffic meltdown at rush hour.

I'm home early because Ben has an appointment with the occupational therapist.

There have been evacuations in the 5 miles around the plant, but NO injuries.

That could be bad for the residents surrounding the explosion. Glad no one was injured.

I've not listened to any news today, so had not heard this. DH just said it is the same company who had an explosion here in our town late this past summer!! The good thing is they were very good about dealing with anyone who experienced any problems as a result of the explosion. We were out of our house one night, and kept our DD and her two little ones out an extra night just to be safe. They reimbursed us for the hotel room, and meals.

I hope the folks in Des Moines are treated as well.

I just went and read the news on the internet. It is a report that sounds exactly like what happened here in July. Dejavu... Our town was evacuated. Some folks in the areas close to the explosion were out of there homes for up to 5 days. I'm thinking for a few it was even longer then that.

Our explosion happened mid morning, and towards evening the fire departments thought they were getting things under control, but then they had another smaller explosion at 9:30 that night. At that point they even stopped letting the police officers escort people to their homes so they could get medicines and pets. The hotels in Wichita were filled with displaced people.

As said in my previous email the good part of this story was the way Barton Solvent reacted by reimbursing expenses etc very quickly! I pray the Des Moines folks are treated as well.
