We are going on a southern caribben cruise we will hit, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, Atigua and Barbados.... any suggestions for good places to get cigars (as everybody I like Monticristo's and Cohiba's but I am open to suggestions)? Also an idea of the price you may have paid for a box would be great? Thanks for the help in advance...

I cannot recall the name of any particular stores, however, in San Juan, St Thomas, St Lucia and Barbados there are shops in the port area that sell cigars. Most are tobacco shops, but some of the liquor shops also had cigars. Don't expect any bargins, especially on the Cubans, they know cruisers like to purchase them and have jacked up the price accordingly. Only buy as many Cubans you can smoke during the cruise. And any others you intend to take home, make sure you keep the receipt and keep the box or the band on them to prove where they were made. I have witnessed lots of people getting busted on the way home and being forced to turn over any Cubans they have. My guess is the Customs guys either have a good supply or they get sent to DC for the bigshots.

Did I mention that I am Canadian....? That's an interesting question. If I buy a box or two of Cubans to bring home and I have a stopover in Detroit, I guess I can be busted for just having those in the U.S.? How does this work, because in Canada, cuban cigars are perfectly legal...????

Good question. I could see you wanting to bring them in because of tax reasons. I think it would all depend on where you fill out customs forms. If you have to declare and fill out forms in detroit, you could have a problem. If you don't have to declare until you get to Canada, you might be OK. Then again the exchange rate of Dollars to Loonies might get you too.

Okay, I just got off the phone with U.S. customs. If they catch me, during my 1-hour layover, with any cubans they will confiscate the cigars and I could face incarceration!!! Do you believe that. They are legal where I bought them, they are legal where I am going... I have to stop for an hour and won't even be able to leave the terminal , ie: I'll still be in an international area waiting to board another international flight, and I could be incarcerated for my stopover???!

I think I should start looking into some other good Domenican or other Caribbean brands.
