coffee and tea

Hi,

I have heard mixed things about the coffee on the Princess ships. . Is there a charge for plain, black coffee? Also, I have heard it is not the best. I am considering bringing a small, one cup coffee maker from home, to avoid having to wait for room service, so I can have a hot cup of coffee in the mornings. Also, who has gone to the afternoon tea? Is it good? Any thoughts would be most appreciated--thanks! Counting down to our sail date of June 21st!!!:

Regular coffee is free from room service, in the dining room and at the buffet. Specialty flavored coffees cost extra and coffee from the Pattisserie (sp?) was extra. Oddly, the pastries at the Pattisserie were free. =huh

Thanks to those who responded to my post--I think I'll leave my coffee maker at home, and save space in my suitcase for something else! We will look forward to tea time!

I've read on other cruise boards that Princess offers a Coffee Card for purchase (roughly $30 which includes tip). It's good for 15 specialty coffees and can be used by anyone in your party. In addition, the card allows you free brewed coffee from the Patisserie any time you want! I love to indulge in a good latte now and again, as does my husband, so we're going with the card and getting our brewed coffee there rather than at the buffet, etc.

Do they serve decafinated coffee on Princess? I really struggle to find this anywhere outside the UK or NZ so am thinking of bringing my own supply.

I've had decaf coffee in the dining room on Princess! I've never noticed whether it's available in the Horizon court or not....I usually have tea for brekkie!

One of my favorite things about Princess is afternoon tea. First it's every day (some other lines only hold it a few days). And the tea alone is delicious. But of course I freely indulge in all the cookies, sandwiches, and most importantly, the scones.

It's also where I've met a number of people that I became friendly with during the cruises.

There is Decaf available 24/7 for coffee in The Horizon Court buffet simply help yourself.and ASK at meal times..:).
:grin I have a very bad allergic reaction to decaf..
as a Biology class student in High School I learned I am allergic to formaldehyde..:(..my hands and arms rash up from where the agent was on me.. and sad to say it's a commonly used agent for dissection things, and as Nurse in Nursing School it was reinforced even worse..=eek.. my body simply revolted..just being near it caused my skin to itch..and touching it..:(.. and I had to double glove the entire semester..:(..for that class/lab..

so I only drink high test coffee as the agent used to make coffee decaffeinated is FORMALDEHYDE!!.. well by accident my Best Friend Marie and I and our DH's got Decaf..funnily enough she is allergic to it too..she gets "wound up"..... and I get so "wound" and it's not good as then we both get "restless leg syndrome!!..=eek.... well her husband and mine had mentioned how we both were "super wound " in the cabins after dinner late and casino.. ..The next night when we got coffee at our Second seating PM meal.. the waiter said OOPPS I think you got Decaf by accident last night ..well we were =lolgang..live and learn.. we ask every single time before it's poured..=eek...
enjoy your decaf.....:daisy..Joanne

wow, that's quite a story. I am the same when I drink normal coffee - I get heart palpitations and can't breathe properly. I never knew that formaldehyde was used to take the caffeine out, almost puts me off drinking decaf. But I LOVE my coffee in the morning so I'll take my chances!

Thanks for the info

I've been on several Princess cruises over the past 6 years. I'm not too much of a coffee snob, as long as the quality is Starbucks or better, but the coffee's miserable on Princess. To be fair, I've been on a lot of cruises, different cruise lines, and all the standard coffee's been bad. We only get coffee at the coffee specialty places, at extra charge. Even that's not great, but hey, it's better than the slop they serve everywhere else on the ships. Another horrible beverage is the iced tea that comes out of the machines. If you like iced tea, best bet is to brew it from tea bags and hot water in one of the big plastic glasses, then pour it over ice in another glass. The real thing! What comes out of those machines (not just Princess, all of them) doesn't even resemble real iced tea. This is my only food/beverage issue on any cruise, and that's because my beverage diet consists mainly of bottled water (easy to get), coffee, iced tea, and red wine (also easy to get.) I also bring along green tea bags, because they often don't have it at the buffet.
