Colon, Panama - What to Do

My husband and I, along with my parents, will be sailing on the 12/6 11 day Summit cruise on December 6. I was wondering if there was anyone who had done this itinerary before that could offer suggestions for this port.

My husband and I did a full transit of the canal back in December 2002. My folks have never seen the canal before and I was hoping to find a tour guide that could get them close to the canal to see all the "action". My mom doesn't walk particularly well, so I am always leery of going the group bus tour route arranged by the cruise line.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Many thanks and happy sailing....

I was there two years ago. I t hought it was great because you could see the ships passing through and the gates opening plus the machines that guide the ship through. I have not gone thru the canal on board but i feel i learned enough about it without doing that. The only difficulty in walking will be that there are stairs to climb to get up higher to see what is going on but you can still see a lot. I hope this helps. It really liked it as that is real history.

Take the ocean to ocean railroad tour. No walking involved, air conditioned trains and buses and you get to go to the Miraflores Locks and see them close up.
