We will be stopping in Columbia in March. We know that the government has issued travel alerts for there. We don't plan on excursions there. What is the port area like? Anyone with a clue? Straw market? Resturants? Feel safe? Anyone info would be appreciated.

The 2 spellings are interchangable-so take your pick. By the way I don't think you meant to capitalize the word "mean".

Now don't be mean! :)D

We took a private tour in Columbia organized by Lee Miles who owns Mr. Emeralds. He was contacted by email. (info available on the "other" cruise boards port info) We really enjoyed the tour, went to the fort, an old church, the monastery, the walled city, did two very brief shopping stops. I know we toured other area but can't think of them right now., It was an outstanding tour. There were 12 of us and we had a new air-conditioned bus that held about 20. Our tour guide was full of information and at no time did we feel unsafe. The vendors are aggressive, but polite and there are good buys to be had. We talked to some people who did the fort tour through Princess which had way too much walking for us. They enjoyed it though.

Cartenga is a beautiful city, full of history. Don't stay on the ship and miss it! We hope to visit there again.

Oh yes, but don't forget to mention the ubiquitous stop to buy Emeralds at the end.

Actually, we went to a great place on our own. A place called Hotel SportBaru on Baru Island. We went for the day, it cost about $50 a person and this was for the 45-50 minute boat excursion each way AND lunch at the restaurant on the island. GREAT snorkleing and swimming. The beach is totaly cool. Palm trees, clear water. We hung out for about 5 hours swimming and laying in the sun, lunch was ok, fish, rice, etc. GREAT DAY!!!
