COMPUTER POLICIES ON CELEBRITY?

I'm trying to find out the details of computer usage on Celebrity. I know the ships have internet cafes, but what are the charges?

Additionally, do they have connectivity so that you can use a laptop in your room, and, if so, what is the charge for that?

I tried the celebrity website, but their "staying in touch" page is out-of-date, and only mentions phone and FAX numbers for being contacted onboard--and does not even list an ocean code for South America.

If any of you have cruised with Celebrity in the past few months, please tell what the capabilities are and how much they charge. These things change quickly so a response from a recent cruiser, as opposed to somebody who cruised a year ago, would be best.)

Thanks,
Charlotte

GOOD QUESTION! I guess a not so newbie still has stuff to learn!

So, this is what the site says....

Internet
Guests will be able to access the internet 24-7 at the I-Cafe, or at scheduled times in the computer lab for a fee of $0.75 per minute. Guests aboard the Millennium-class ships will also be able to connect their personal laptops to the internet from their stateroom. Wireless access is available in the Rendezvous Square on Century-class ships.

Does that mean that on the Infinity (a Mill. class ship?) that we can use our laptop at $.75 /min, or for free?

Hey Glorya !

Nothing is for free!! There is a package of minutes that can be purchased, but it seems to vary with each ship and sailing. What someone answers today might not apply tomorrow. As you get closer in to your cruise you can get more up to date info. I have an email addresss for an account executive for the loyalty program who alwys gets back to me in a timely manner with the right answers. I'll send it to you at home. Charlotte, I also emailed you the contact.

The Millenium-class ships offer Connect@Sea which provides an in-cabin computer hookup, provided you bring your own laptop. The charge is $25 per day for 50 minutes of internet service; $0.75 for each minute thereafter. Service is considerably slower than it is landside, but decent considering you're beaming from satellite to satellite. Nevertheless, the 50 minutes will pass much more quickly than you're probably used to and your internet bill can be steep if you're not careful. The are some bulk minute packages available, but they kick in on top of the basic daily charge.

If you don't opt for Connect@Sea, you can use Celebrity's computers at $0.75/minute. There are some packages available but the rate is still high. I believe e-mail is charged at a flat rate per.

If you're not married to the idea of in-cabin service or even onboard computer lab service, the most cost-effective method of staying in touch via e-mail or the internet is using one of the many internet cafes readily available in all the ports.

Thanks for clearing up some questions for me.

Actually, I was thinking more of the teen then me. I know that IMing and email is a huge part of keeping in touch with her buds, especially during the summer.

Personally, I have NO desire to communicate with work while on vacation. I already get phone calls at home at 2am or on weekends for stupid stuff, I do NOT want them to know they can get ahold of me!

Hi Glorya

Pops again.
One in our party of ten leased the Connect@Sea for the $25 a day with the 50 minutes a day but also purchased a extra block of 500 minutes @ 50 cents a minute. That's the lowest number of extra minutes to recieve the discount rate. You can use this time from your laptop or at the Internet Cafe. The computers in the Cafe seem to have a bit faster connection than the cabin connection.

That would be 500 minutes to use any day you wish? We'll be on the Infinity for 10 days, and $250 for those 10 days is pretty high, IMHO!

Yes, you can use those minutes any time in your cabin or in the Internet Cafe. You do get the 50 minutes a day with the $25 a day charge for the modem. There are a limited number of modems available so you need to get one the first day you get onboard. Myself being a computer admin for a high school I didn't touch a computer for the 2 weeks we were onboard. It was nice to get away.

the best advice is the one about using the cyber cafes in the ports you'll visit. They are inexpensive, fast and private. Your teen can talk or play much less expensively than on board. The computers on board are fine, and the "techies" are helpful, but the $$$$ add up very quickly because the connection is extremely slow. You also have the option of paying $2 for EACH email you send or receive, unless you add pictures, then the cost jumps. Hope this is helpful and have a great trip.

on the ship the computer rooms are most crowded after returning from shore. A lot of people are down-loading their digital shots from that day. They offer free downloads but you have to pay $15 to make a cd of your pictures. I don't know about the cyber cafes. Sorry.

Doesn't your cruise make any port stops? I do ALL my emailing in ports generally at prices that are a tiny portion of the rip-offs from cruise ships. I've done this in the Mediterranean, Baltic, Caribbean, and around South America. Seldom do I not find a cyber cafe near the port.

How DO you find a cyber cafe? Will the ship help you? Do you think Alaska will have them?

That's not at all correct. There are internet cafes or kiosks in every port in alaska. We also have indoor plumbing and electricity. Dish TV, and the Cooper Mini. I have never driven a dog sled, and no one lives in Igloos. We even get regular mail Monday thru Saturday.
