When I booked my cruise on Conquest, I thought those would be neat rooms to get, BUT the cabin above you can see into your balcony, and when you are eating breakfast or lunch in the rear dining room, you can REALLY feel the engines, and see the ship going up and down, I am much happier having my balcony cabin on the side in the front.
We were in one on the Empress deck (7) in February. It is true that others above you can see the area near the rail. The area near the stateroom window and door is private though. This wasn't an issue for us. The size of the balcony (larger), the fact that you can see both port and starboard, you receive more sun and that usually there is shade if you want it outweighed any privacy issues. I will say that when we were in Narlins we did get condensation and rain dripping off the overhang onto whatever is under it.
Recently had #8207 on Conquest. Third from the front of ship. Wonderful room and fun to walk out on balcony and wave at crew members on the bridge. We liked ship so well that we are booking iy again.
My wife and I had a stern stateroom (Empress deck 6262) on the Pride in May. You can't get any further aft than that. The other 3 couples traveling with us also had stern cabins. We all thought they were great! We found it very relaxing to sit and watch the wake as the ship was underway and the views at night were incredible. There is only a privacy issue if you are up against the rail. We had no problems with it. There is some movement and vibration but again we found it very soothing. We both slept great.
In fact, we liked it so much that we're booked on the Glory next May in a stern cabin.
