Hello all,
family is going on the carnival conquest to Jamica, Cayman Islands and then to Cozemel. We have been to Cozemel before. So here are the questions?
1. Jamica: is it as dangerous as everyone says, whats there to do there.
2. Cayman: hows the shopping and what would you suggest?
3. The Conquest: Any secrets, best eating places and times, how is the kids program my kids are 13 and 17 and mostly like the late night disco stuff.
Any info would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

My husband and I cruised on the Paradise so I do not have answers about your ship. I do, however, know about Conzumel, Cayman and Jamaica. That was our itinerary. In Conzumel we rented a jeep and toured the island on our own. We then stopped at a beach club about 5 miles from the port, paid what I think was 25 dollars and drank, ate, swam in the pool and beaches all day for that one price. We then headed back to the town, did some shopping and got my hair braided. In Grand Cayman we did the snorkel adventure which was beautiful!!! Grand Cayman is gorgeous for snorkeling. We then went to the Hard Rock, then shopped on the main drag (which is gorgeous). We had to wait for a smaller boat to take us back to the ship.In Jamaica we climbed Dunns River Falls. In my opinion that was nothing special. I thought when I heard water fall it was going to be more spectacular than it was.My husband didnt like it at all. On the way out of Dunns River Falls they purposely make you walk through a maze of little kiosks of people selling things. In our opinion they were pushy and rude.We headed right back to the ship and did not see the rest of Jamaica.I would suggest doing a dolphin adventure in Jamaica. It looked fun. Others may have good experiences there, but my husband and I would not go back even if it was given to us for free.Hope this helps a little bit.

Montego Bay, take a tour! Do not go into the downtown shopping area. If you do, you will be hounded to death by the locals trying to sell you something, or simply begging. If you wish to do some shopping there, a duty free shopping area is located right next to the pier. In Grand Cayman, I highly recommend Captain Marvin's Stingray City tour (about half the cost of a similar tour booked through the cruise line). Do not plan to do any shopping here; prices are staggering! In Coz, I recommend Chankanaab Park and of course, Carlos & Charlies. Have fun!

Just got back from this cruise (7/13 - 7/20). My wife and I had the best time! (But what do I know - it was my first time on a cruise). However, I have traveled a great deal and it was the best value for the money we have ever spent on a vacation.
To answer your questions:
Jamaica - We did the Dunns River Falls tour and except for climbing the falls - hated it. The bus ride there was too long (almost three hours!) We made one stop at a "rest stop" where the locals offer you their souvenirs or some ganja if you want it. Didn't feel very safe there, some guy came up to my wife and was bothering her the second I went to the rest room. Once at the falls, you climb up the falls with about 1,000 of your "closest friends". It took us over an hour and a half to get to the top. That was worth the experience of doing it once in your life. But not again. Then as someone else stated, the maze of shops at the top don't feel very safe. They harrass you to buy something. One guy actually took me by the arm and dragged me to his stand! (I'm not tiny - 6 ft 2 in. - 225 lbs) I wanted to get out of there right away. We ended up buying something from him we found later at Montego Bay for almost half the price and that was after we haggled with him to drop his original price by half! On the bus ride back, same rest stop, but we didn't even get off the bus that time. Then shopping in Montego Bay for a half hour before we had to get back to the ship. We haggled for our souvenirs, got them dirt cheap and they fell apart once we got home. There has got to be a better excursion, just be safe and keep your eyes open and on your family.
Grand Cayman- Much nicer and safer than Jamaica, but much more expensive too. Was looking forward to this port because I once spent two weeks here years ago. Not enough time to do everything I wanted. We took the island tour and Stingray City excursion. No time for shopping afterwards because we had to get back on the ship. But I will tell you no price haggling here, and everything is very expensive! Plus $1.00 Cayman = $1.25 US.
Finally, never having cruised before I cannot compare the Conquest to other ships, but we felt it was beautiful. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We felt the service was great. We ate at one of the two formal dining rooms (Monet) every night and always had a great meal. Don't be afraid to ask for more food, like a second lobster tail, etc. Everyone at our table did. We had a late seating so we didn't have to rush back to the ship on port days. The buffet was good. We would eat there for breakfast and lunch. Everyone recommends going to the Point supper club. It is $25 per person and looks good, but we did not eat there. There is a 24 hour pizzeria, which I would grab every night! See the shows, but avoid the magic show the Deja - not very good. The comedians we saw were all good. Don't play bingo, we felt it was fixed... There was one guy who won twice in the same session and didn't seem to care, like he knew before hand...
If you are going to book your excursions on the ship, do it through your TV. It is much easier than standing in line with 20-30 other people.
Alfred's bar is nice if you like jazz music, cigars and martinis. Vincents bar had a duo from Nashville that played c and w and some pop tunes. The Degas Lounge had a Philippino three piece band that played alot of "light rock", Eagles, Jimmy Buffett, etc. The night we saw them only three other people were there, but they were good. As a matter of fact, for having almost 3,000 guests on board, there never seemed to be alot of people around. (Except when getting on or off at the ports). I guess there is so much to do and the ship is so big, it doesn't seem crowded.
The disco (Henri's) was never very busy on our cruise and there was security there checking ids (You had to be 18 to enter). I think this is because it is right by the teens area. That looked cool. We have an 11 and 15 year old, that we plan to take on this cruise next year and we think they will have a blast. The teen area included a "bar" for drinks, a dance floor, and video arcade games. It was always crowded and the kids all seemed to be having fun.
Overall, we had a excellent time and sure you will too. If there is anything specific you want to know, please feel free to ask.

Mike, what a great review! Thank-you so much for taking the time to write so much. Thanks also to Blazinnchula and Cruzman.

Mike, we did want to know about the swimming pools, how many also about the hot tubs were they crowded, how was getting off the boat at the cayman did it take long?
What would you suggest we do on the cayman, I have two boys ages 13 and 17 so we want to do the stingray tour but what next? Does carnival have any kind of private beach there? What did you do in cozumel, and what did you guys wear to the evening meals. Last time we saw everything from slacks and shirt to a tux, same for women.
Also everyone has told us that Jamica we should stay at the boat, is that what you would suggest.
Thanks for the info! And your time!

Jamaica is a rough place, you need to stay with a tour group. We have been there several times, did the Dunn's River climb. Guides carrying your camera and take pictures and expect a big tip at the end. We opted for horse back riding in the surf on one trip. Better than the falls.

Grand Cayman is very safe, Caymains are nicest people in the Caribbean. Very expensive. Great place to dive or snorkel. Don't bother with booking on the ship for shore dives or snorkeling, walking 1/4 mile east from the pier to Eubanks or Eden Rocks dive shops. Great diving there. Catch a cab and go on to Sunset House for more shore diving.

Cozumel is a fun spot. Take $5 and $1 bills. Cab fare is $6 a cab one way to just about anywhere, even the Chakunab Park. Cab stand is in the park and don't worry about getting a ride back to the ship. Again, if you are diving, check your arrival time in port. You can get great deals at Dive Paradise if you contact them in advance. Tell "Apple" Joe from Venice recommended you.

You're welcome for the time. This way, I get to help you, but I also get to relive the great time we had...
There are three pools- one on deck 10 with one hot tub right next to the slide. There are two pools on deck 9, one outside with two hot tubs right behind the stage and the other is aft by the pizzeria and hamburger station. That one has a retractable roof, so the roof maybe open or closed depending on the weather. But the roof is a skylight, so it still has natural light. The are two more hot tubs back there, these are "adult only". I think that means 18 and older. I found this area to be less crowded when it was nice. Security would kick kids out of these, which was nice. I don't think people realized the roof opened up back there and they tended to crowd around the two outdoor pools. Also, there is a hot tub in the gym. This one is adult only as well. It has a waterfall behind it, but it is indoors with a skylight.
There is alot of chair saving everywhere by the pools, so beware. People put their towels down and you don't see them for the rest of the day.
Next-
Getting off at Grand Cayman was no problem. We had a 9:15am excursion, so we were told to meet in the Degas Lounge and then when the tender was there someone directed us to walk down to deck 0 and we got right on the boat. No waiting! Getting back on board was a different story. We waited 45 minutes at least to board a boat going back to the ship. No customs check or anything here, just waiting for the boats to go back and forth to the ship.
Carnival doesn't have a private beach there, but there is an excursion that goes to 7 mile beach. You'll be better off getting advice from some more seasoned cruisers about what to do and where to go on Grand Cayman.
On Cozumel-
We took the catamaran/snorkel tour and had a blast. After snorkeling we went to a private beach for an hour or so. I have heard that Chakunab Park is the place to go. I would check that out if I went again.
As far as evening meals, I wore tropical/Hawaiian shirts and linen-type white pants and sandals, which I thought was fine. The dress code is no shorts, jeans, or t-shirts. So anything but that is good. My wife wore summer-y dresses. We saw people wearing shorts and thought it was not allowed, so go figure. It looked to me like most men had shirts like mine or short sleeve dress shirts and slacks. Follow the dress code, you'll be fine, you're on vacation! On the formal nights, I wore a black suit and tie and my wife had her formal/cocktail dresses. There were some men with tuxs but not many. I wasn't going to get a tux just for a cruise.
Lastly,
If you are not interested in Jamaica, stay on the boat. But I didn't want to be right there and not see it at least once in my life. If you do ANYTHING in Jamaica, just stay with your tour group and you'll be okay.
Hope this helps.
