Costa Maya isn't really a village. It is a new area set up by the cruise line's for shopping and they have show's in the middle like a town square. They have thier own beach area which is not very big.The prices there are not as good as Cozumel or Play Del carmen, I think probably because it is a joint effort by several different cruise line's.They can control the pricing. It is sort of like going to a ship's private island only it is more geared to shopping.Hope this help's. We were recently in Costa Maya on the Veendam and booked a private shore excursion called the Costa Maya Beach Break. For $5 we took a an air conditioned bus into town and then a 5 minute stroll to the south end of the town of Mahahual to a private beach area. For $25 per adult ($15 for children 12 & under), you get full use of the beach including your own table, beach umbrella and lounge chairs. You get full access to their open bar all day long, as well as access to their restaurant and kayak rentals and beach massages are available. If you wish, you can leave for some shopping in town and then return at your leisure. I brought my snorkel gear and had a great time swimming out to the reef where the snorkeling was excellant. This is one of the best shore tour values I've experienced in my 22 cruises. I believe the name of the tour operator is Island Marketing, but I'm sure you can easily find it with any search engine. In any event, have a great time in Costa Maya!

If you are not into drinking... You can go to Majuahaul on your own.. 3.00pp cab ride to get there and a 2.00 cab ride to get back. there are an assortment of resturants across the ways rom the beach-- you can get free chairs at the beach if you buy food and /or drinks from the resturant.

We sat at Tappas bar-- ate, drank and was merry- total bill for the two of us was 10 bucks. Beers here are 2 bucks. massages can be had for 20 bucks. go during a slow period and you can have a longer massage- both SO and I had a 50 minute massage for 20 bucks each- take your own towel.

The beach break is now 30 bucks and does not include food.. it is an open bar. and you do get a chair.

if you do not want to go into the town of majuahul you can stay on the pier at costa maya--there is a pool (salt water) with a swim up bar.

This cruise we are doing a ruins tour to Chaccobean.

We were suppose to go to Costa Maya on our last cruise; unfortunately, the weather wouldn't let us. Our ship tried to dock several times and couldn't. Rough water and high winds. So, we just went back out to sea. We heard (from many crew members) that quite a few ships have had trouble docking there and many of them end up missing that port. It was disappointing but they did give everyone a $25 onboard credit and ran some "missed port" specials that day...

When we went to Costa Maya we took an excursion up to the Mayan ruins with David and Ivan http://www.chacchobenruins.com/. It was a great experience. The two of them are from the area and know sooooo many things that they will share with you.

When we got back from the excursion we went to the beach at Majahual. We sat at a table, ate conch, drank beer and had a wonderful relaxing couple of hours before we returned to the ship.

Here is a link with some pictures from there: http://community.webshots.com/album/527685047YCNWgf

Have a great time, whatever you do!

We are on the Glory 2/25/06 and Costa Maya is one stop along with Belize. I could book a Belize excursion online but I can only view the Costa Maya excursions and not book it. We had planned to take the Jungle Beach excursion but as I read here there are more beach choices privately available.

It may be that Carnival is unsure if they can dock at Costa Maya and thus don't offer any excursions at this time. It is the only place we could get on a beach since Key West and Belize don't seem to have a beach excursion. Also, what does "Open Bar" mean on those beach excursions...

We were in Costa Maya on the Liberty this December. We were fortunate that we had beautiful weather.

We took the 7 1/2 Ship tour of Kohunlich Mayan Ruins. These were the most spectacular we have ever seen. We have been to Tulum. Currently you are no longer allowed to climb the steps in Tulum. Here at Kohunlich we were allowed to climb up, or sit etc. on all of the ruins. There are at least 15 stops on this tour. The difference between this tour and the one at Chacchoben is vast. Chacchoben is a smaller site that is not very excavated.

You have to see to believe what they have uncovered at Kohunlich. This is not the tour to take if you still want time to shop for a mexican trinket.. or lounge with a drink by the beach. But if you want to really experience the Culture and history instead of a tourist trap this is the real deal. I would not book this tour through a private tour as we got back with 25minutes to spare. The roads to the ruins dont run thru any major city and it would be really bad if the bus broke down!

The tour guides were amazing they took an hour of the 2 1/2 hr. bus ride to get us educated on the history of this area and the ruins. Their jobs are considered very prestigious they must attend multiple classes. There are no souviner shops at Kohunlich!

Now if you still want that drink by the beach then the Chacchoben tour is the way to go.

As we were dashing to catch the ship we literally bought a mexican blanket without stopping!!

Thanks so much for this post! I was really unsure which excursion to choose. Your description made the choice clear. I just booked it with Carnival for Friday April 14th for 4 of us. Thanks so much. Now let's hope we get into port!!

Just a bit of advice.. Number one a hat.. number two insect repellant ( we brought the individually wrapped wipes) there are mosquitos here.. Not thousands.. but since you are truly in the jungle. You will see them stopping on your legs to visit..LOL
And Thirdly good pair of walking shoes.

And lots of film and video..

You hit the nail on the head. Unfortunatley/fortunatley my boat didn't quite head the warning and I found myself spending 3 days in Beautiful Costa Maya. The "town" shuts down when the boats leave if anyone was curious, but they open if there's still a boat in port. Long story short when I went there the first day we decided not to do ab excursion. It was pretty cool we had no problem getting tables at the restaurants or a beach chair and umbrella. My freind and I got us some long pink drinks and sat and chilled. This is the most perfect place not to schedual something and just walk and chill. That would be my suggestion. And if your boat has a little misfortune with docking, just enjoy the extra days.

Hello,

My wife and I are looking at booking a cruise that stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya...are there any beaches in Costa Maya that offer European Style sunbathing (topless)?? I know there are several in Cozumel, as we were there this Spring (Mescalitos), but have never been to Costa Maya.

FYI: Carnival Cruise Lines no longer offer a tops optional deck for their adventurous females....
