What is the unimog? We took the Mayan ruins tour and it was great, I would recommend this.

We don't know about the Unimog tour either. However, here is a thought for Costa Maya.
Walk off the ship and catch a taxi to the small village about 2 miles away. I believe the taxi fare was less than $5 per person, round trip. Take a horseback ride (about $20 per person for a 2 hour ride) if you want some movement. If not, find a beachside table and drink Mexican beer for a few hours ($2.00 per bottle). When approached by a local souveneir vendor, act like they say in the drug ads (JUST SAY NO).
This is an amazing port. They have a divided four lane highway (paved with building blocks) leading from the port to a local road (potholed two lane asphalt). The only traffic are the local taxis from the port to the local village and we almost had a headon at the spot where the four lane intersects with the local two lane road. Go figure.
I am not trying to gross you out with this description. If you have found a nice tour, go for it!!! If not, don't get your expectations too high. Not much to do in the neighborhood, but they are still learning.

Costa Maya is kind of interesting because it's a government project. It was build out of nothing and the inhabitants of Majahual were connected to electricity just this February. The goal is to make of it the "next Cancun". When you arrive, there is a big "resort style" tourist trap. I got the hell out of there and since I always found the exursions overpriced, my husband and I kind of went on our own (although I wished we could've booked an exursion to visit Mayan ruins, maybe via an independent tour) but anyway... So we walked all the way to Majahual. It's an half-an-hour walk (if you take your time) on a trail by the sea. Very nice...
Majahual is very poor of course but nice. I know some cruisers are going loaded with school materials to give to the schools there. They have restaurants and bars. the water is beautiful. Just make sure you plan what you want to do otherwise, you might get bored.
