Costa Maya instead of Cozumel on the Valor

I got an email from Carnival saying they changed the itinerary on my Oct. 15, 2006 sailing. We are visiting Costa Maya now instead of Cozumel.

Had anyone visited Costa Maya?? Do you recommend any particular excursion there?

We did the dune buggy trip. What fun.
We went early and the had time to take a taxi to Mahuljhal. 3 bucks each way. A fishing village. Prices are better there for gifts. Costa Maya is a manmade port by the cruise ships.Enjoy

DW and I spent the day at Mahahual, and both agree it was one of the best days of the cruise. No excursions. Spent 2.50 for a beer at the "cruise ship village" and said the heck with this! Spent the $3.00 for a cab ride to town and another $20.00 (each) for all we could eat and drink at one of the beach side bars. We had a great day laying out, swimming, bartering with the store keepers, etc.

DW was a little hesitant at first after seeing conditions outside the cruise landing area in Belieze (and the warnings not to leave the vacinity if not on an excorted tour). After about 10 minutes in Mahahual, she was loving it!

Can you please tell me how to pronounce the name of this town? We will be visiting there in less than a week, and I don't want to look stupid!

Thanks, Terry

The English pronunciation is Mahahual. J's are pronounced as h's in Spanish. When we were there last November, we booked the Costa Maya Beach Break online through Island Marketing LTD. We loved the experience; it included an open bar all day, your own beach table with umbrella and beach chairs, restrooms and shower. There is a restaurant where you can preorder lunch which they will serve to you right on the beach. Bring your own snorkel gear and swim out to the barrier reef (about a 10 minute wade/swim) and enjoy some great snorkeling. We had a wonderful time there!

We also did the dune buggy tour and it was EXCELLENT!! :thumb

I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Some of the most beautiful pictures of the entire cruise were at Costa Maya. :)

I loved Costa Maya, we were there in October on the cruise the week before Cozumel got hammered by that Hurricane. It was a great place to go. For us, we look for a place that we can do and do things, than I look for a place to relax, shop and just chill on the beach. Costa Maya was this place for us. There is fantastic shopping there, and everything you need to do is right there at the peir in my opinion. We did the Croc farm tour, but I really wouldnt recommend that. It was horrible, but I loved Costa Maya, even more so than Cozumel.

Got a massage here. Wait til the slower end of the day-- 50 minutes for 20 bucks. take your own towel. We used the place across the way from Tappas bar. Ate drank and was merry for under 10 bucks for the both of us.

We will be on the Valor on April 2nd...can't wait!!! We are stopping at Costa Maya and originally was thinking about not even getting off the ship here. But after reading some posts we are reconsidering this. A couple questions:

1. Serene...you mentioned getting a beach massage. I always get a massage on the ship and this is the only place I've ever had one. Did the beach massage compare to that? Is it private or are you on view? I don't know how comfortable I'd be with that!
2. Lady Jag...you mentioned the dune buggy excursion. Can you do this with a group of 4 in the same buggy? Can you stop to hang out/swim/snorkel on the beach or is it just an excursion driving around?
3. If we choose to snorkel and spend the day at the beach is there a place that anyone can recommend? I've heard a lot mentioned about Majahaul...is the snorkeling good here and can you just go off the beach?

We are stopping in Costa Maya, Belize, Grand Cayman and Roatan and would really like to enjoy a nice day by the beach with some good snorkeling. Any info would be appreciated!

We will be on the Valor Aug 20. We will be visiting Costa Maya as well. I am only wondering what we should do. We will not book an excursions for this port. We have 3 kids who will be 12, 7, and 2 when we cruise. Im looking for suggestions on what to do with 3 kids, any place we should go where we could all relax and have fun?
