I've been to the Chaccoben ruins with a tour guide by the name of Ivan. I believe this was in 2006...we went to three different sights and had a wonderful day. We met Ivan in Mahahual and then went to the ruins in a nice a/c van.

I've now been to Tulum, Lamanai (Belize) and Chaccobean...so far, Chaccobean wins. Belize in a very close 2nd.

Costa Maya in itself is just a man-made port, that I think RCL built in order to have a place to dock on that side of Mexico.

Hope this helps. :)

3rd try at posting--hope they all don't pop up at once--
Anyway regarding Costa Maya, just to clarify, Costa Maya is not a man made island. It's on the mainland of Mexico.Rumors have abounded that it was made by the cruise lines --each rumor had a different cruiseline developing it.
From what I've read and understand, it was a joint venture between the cruise lines, the Gov. and a group of investors. But, in a sense, aren't all the ports " Man-made "?
Look at St. Thomas--take out all the shopping mall like jewelry stores and what do you have left ?
I've been to Costa Maya several times--3 times before the hurricane wiped it off the earth about 2 years ago and once this past Jan. after it was re-opened as a port. Signs of the hurricane was very evident. The main shopping-port area is pretty much rebuilt, although there's a few things that were not rebuilt, like the ampi-theater that was in the middle of the shopping complex where they used to hold 2 Mexican folk dance shows daily. It won't be rebuilt. There's shops, a swimming pool in the middle of the complex, a couple of restaurants, etc. and of course, plenty of shops.
Down the coast a mile or 2 was a little village Mahajual ( spl ) that was a neat place to visit. Prior to the hurricane, it had a main street of dirt alongside the beach. Across the road were shops, a few bars, restaurants, etc. It was wiped off the planet too.
It's been mostly rebuilt. The dirt road has been replaced with a winding path of pavers--the shops are pretty much rebuilt . You can get cheap beachside massages, food, drinks, etc. You can swim, snorkel, etc. if that's your thing.
It's still a neat place to visit but the signs of the damage done to the natural environment is still evident and will be for years. You can get a cab or take a bus there from the main port complex--plenty of cabs available to take you back when you're ready to go.
I would say if you're looking for another St. Thomas, St. Martin or another Cozumel, you may not like Costa Maya. If you're looking for something different and wanting to get out and see some of the real Mexico, you would probably like it.

If you are looking for a good beach day, I suggest taking a taxi to Mahajual. It is way cheaper than Costa Maya. I just walk dow the beach, till one of the guys is nice to me, negotiate a chair and table, always ask for the first drink to be included of course ;)

I really like the relaxed feel of Mahajual (many different spellings), but others enjoy the party atmosphere in Costa Maya. I have to admit I have been induced to have one more Cocktail as I approach the party when coming back to the ship.

I avoid the "shopping mecca" at Costa Maya. The pool is usually crowded because the coastline at Costa Maya proper is rocky and no good for swimming. With a little too much tequila I have seen some pretty rowdy times there.

I agree with taking a Taxi to Mahahual. The beach is nice and the three times I have been there the water was crystal clear.

Enjoy :spyglass:

Is the $3 Bus gone?

Not sure about the bus. We took it the first time we went but I haven't been there since the before the hurricane. Taxis are pretty cheap. About $5 I think so if you have more than two people it would probably be cheaper than the bus.

We are going to be in Costa Maya in Jan 2010. We'll be finding out for ourselves. Postings were good here and helpful.

We joined the "Nation Of Why Not" once again for Voyager Of The Seas -Galveston Jan 10, 2010 7 Days. Why Not? Could not pass the price for this date. Got an Outside Guarantee at sucha deal!

Plus, since we are RCCL stock holders, we get $100 OBC each time we cruise RCCL which is a good deal. This will be the fourth time we have used the OBC for booking on RCCL. Thank you RCCL

Oh for warm weather on the this cruise. Lighthouse Parking In Galveston. . .here we come again.
