We have a group going on the Grandeur in April to Costa Maya and Cozumel. I have been to Cozumel before but never Costa Maya. Any suggestions on what to do there??

One of the more popular tours here is to the ruins. I haven't been yet as we've cruised there with our children but from what I've heard from others back on the ship they're spectacular. We went to the village of Majahual (sp). They have a very nice beach there with restaurants and bars along the beach. There are tour operators there if you want to take a tour. Its about two miles from the port and you can walk (some did but it was too hot for me), take a cab for about $3 each way or rent a golf cart ($15/hr). We had a really nice day there.

I went on the Grandeur March of 05, and if I were to do it again, I'd probably stay on the ship in Costa Maya. It wasn't my favorite port, limited excursions and the shopping district is pretty much the same stuff you see in Cozumel.

Serenade of the Seas 2/06
Grandeur of the Seas 3/05
Voyager of the Seas 2/02 and 3/04
Sovereign of the Seas 4/99 and 4/97
Nordic Empress 6/95

We had a wonderful time in Costa Maya going to the ruins with David and Ivan from Chacchoben Mayan Ruins tours. The ruins are on land that was owned by Ivan's family and he and David are soooooo wonderful about telling so much information about the lands and people. Afterwards we went to the beach at Majahual for the rest of the afternoon. It was a wonderful day!

Here is a link to our pictures from that day: http://community.webshots.com/album/527685047YCNWgf

Have a great cruise!

We were in Costa Maya in April of 2004 and had a great time at Majahual. We took a cab from the shopping area and just spent the day at the beach and the local bar/eateries (rustic). We are 45ish with 4 teens who all loved it.

As on of the passengers that were able to spend a "extended amount of time" at costa maya, I can give you somewhat of a reveiw. The restaurants and bars are good but nothing special. If you have many excursions already booked on your other ports Costa maya is a good place to get a yard long pink drink and kick on the beach. If you decide to go on the ruins tour, be advised it is an all day event and you will be ridding a bus. Some members of my party went to the ruins and said it was really cool. I personally got me a big pink drink some chips and salsa and had a great "extended" adventure. Have fun, hope this helped!

I LOVED Costa Maya. When we were there the first time last March we did the ruins which were OK. I agree that Ivan was great. I'm just not a ruins kind of guy. The water there is some of the most crystal clear I have seen so I went snorkeling when we were there in August. Here's a link at a good site for Costa Maya tours.

I was there in Sept 05 and didn't think the beach in town was all that, lot's of seaweed, BUT from my lounge chair I had a great view of the water & my ship. Had one of the best massages ever right there on the beach! It was only $20 for a 35-40 min. massage! Shopping in town was more of a "flea market" type experience, long tables set up along a dirt roadl Not bad, just different & I did find some interesting pieces at a good price. If I were to go again I think I would skip town & just hang out at the pool & tourist center right as you get off the boat

That's the route I chose. hanging out in tourist area. Costa maya is for no better description a cruise town. Not to be confused with a resort destination such as cozumel. Cozmel has lot's to do on any given day. Costa maya shuts down when the cruise ships leave. or at least the part you see when you get off the boat. I didn't venture much farther. It's something to think about. It's a good place to sit relax and take in the ocean experience.

We loved Costa Maya. Both times we have been there we have gone into Majahaul. The beach was free and fun. The silver prices were MUCH cheaper than Cozumel. I got some great buys.

The port at Costa Maya has many shops and a big pool with a swim up bar. I also really enjoyed the port.

We are going on Voyager this week, and unfortunately, we are not stopping there. Our cruise is stopping in Cozumel. I like Costa Maya much better than Cozumel. It is still undeveloped and reminds a bit of what Cancun used to be like.

To be honest I was in Costa Maya twice. It looks like Jurassic Park from the ship and being met by men with large weapons doesnt make me feel any safer.
I went on a bus for an excursion and my life flashed before me the way they drive.
Next time I made sure NO EXCURSION and stayed close to the ship. Enough to watch my daughters get hit on by someone called Jose. I would not go back there.

Listen, Costa MAya is small, Majahaul will be cheaper (the old saying goes, go farther away from the mainland and everything is cheaper). I enjoyed Costa MAya, it was really relaxed and a good time. Dip in the water is you can, if it has seaweed SO WHAT!!! if still a vacation. If you havent been there before then your in for an experience. I enjoyed every second of it. The thing i missed most was barting. Its fun and im sure youll enoy it.
