Costa Maya

Time flies by so quickly but if I'm correct it was last year that Costa Maya was basically wiped off by a hurricane.
At first there was talk that it would be well over a year, etc. before any ships could return but the last I heard progress was moving along at a rapid and better than expected pace and it was to re-open sometime around July.
Does anyone have any updated info. regarding this port ?
Thanks. :wave

I know there were several people who said they didn't like this port but I really did. I like the smaller, more out of the way type places. St. Thomas reminds me of a giant flea mkt. made up mostly of jewelry stores.
I liked the small village about a mile down the beach from the port at Costa Maya but after the storm wiped it out and when it's rebuilt, I'm sure it'll never be the same. :wave

HAL's Westerdam will be the first one to visit Costa Maya on November 21 and again on December 12. Other confirmed arrivals are:

Royal Caribbean ~ Independence of the Seas will call on November 26 and December 24
Voyager of the Seas will be starting December 18 on a biweekly basis through 2010.

Carnival ~ Carnival Legend calls on November 7 and December 26
Carnival Glory calls beginning December 17 on a bi-weekly basis through the fall of 2009.

Norwegian ~ Norwegian Spirit will call once a week beginning November 25 through April 2009.

These are just a few but it looks like Costa Maya will be back in business real soon. They will have a new boardwalk along the beach at Mahahul among other new additions.

Just hope they don't spoil the simple charm (and terrific deal :)o) that once was Majahual! A day on the beach, beer and fish tacos for two? $20!
Ahhhhhhhhh!

Mahual is up and running. A taxi will costs you 3 dollars each way.Grab a taxi outside the village.
We looked around and found a great spot to hang out all day. Beach, food and beer.

I really enjoyed our stop in Costa Maya on the Inspiration cruise we took. We put together backpacks full of school supplies for the kids and visited with them in the schools. It was an awesome day and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! To have the little kids hug you saying "gracias" when you gave them a lollipop was priceless! :)

We booked our snorkel trip through a little dive resort that had a restaurant and beach bar with great rum punch. Does anyone know if it is still there?

Great idea about the school supplies - excellent chance for our kids to learn that every kid doesn't end up on a cruise ship! We are leaving in 2 days to go to Cozumel and Costa Maya aboard Grandeur of the Seas. Will report back. Thanks everyone for your info! Blessings to you, and traveling mercies.

My original post on Costa Maya was back in July of '08.
Since then, I have been back there in Jan. '09. It's not like it was prior to the hurricane. ( We had been there twice before the storm hit ). There was signs of damages everywhere, especially to the natural environment--trees, shrubs, etc.The dock area is rebuilt but there is a change in the shopping area as to what it used to be. It's there with plenty of shops, etc. The ampi-theater where they used to have free folk shows twice daily is gone and probably won't be rebuilt.
With regards to Majuahual is not like it used to be. It's being rebuilt but will never be the same. It used to be dirt roads--now has a tiled or paver walkway winding along the main drag--signs of damage and construction is very evident. Still, it's a good stop. I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit there a couple of times the way it used to be but as they say, nothing remains the same--especially after a hurricane has you in it's bullseye!
If I remember correctly the cost of a bus ride or cab was $ 3.00 per person to Mahajual. Go through the shopping area toward the back and you will find the ticket window where you get the tickets.
Enjoy. :wave :wave

Randy, I am with you, the best advice I ever got was get out of Costa Maya and head to Mahajual....nice little relaxing cheap beach day. I did it solo and NO PROBLEMS, the usual Mexican flirting, but held in check. I checked their website, and they are supposedly improving the sidewalk ??? I went straight for the beach, found the most comfortable chair I saw, and that was it ! Also, the restrooms were really clean !

We have been there 3 times before the hurricane and came back from a cruise to Costa Maya 2 months ago. It did loose a little of the fishing village aspect with dirt road and little beachside bars, but I must say it is nicely rebuild and looks just like a little Caribbean jewel. We can definitely recommend Costa Maya!
