On our trip aboard the Millineum in Jan. 05 we will be stopping in Costa Maya. Is there any good tours or snorkeling to do there?

Costa Maya is a somewhat odd port. On our stops there we got the impression that the port was built by the cruise industry, for the cruise industry and is a bit fake (i.e., too clean, colorful, etc) - and in fact it is. You can leave the port area by cab but your options were limited when we where there three years ago. The ships have several shore excursions but if you are looking for a true port city with many options, you will not find them. However, the beach is pretty, the shopping ok albeit cruise ship typical, and the food on the beach and drinks were very nice. We did go swimming on a beach to the left of the dock which was very nice, but small and had a rocky bottom. The water as throughout the Caribbean was clean, clear and warm. Costa Maya was a pretty area, but not one of our favorite ports.

I was actually looking forward to having Key West as a stop in my July itinerary. Recently learned about the change to Costa Maya. Called my travel agency and was told that "Carnival had invested a lot of money into the new port", and I should be able to find something nice to do.

That "rocky bottom" on the beach next to the Costa Maya official mall/port had some of the best snorkeling of our cruise. And it was free.

Costa Maya is a kind of "movie set"--very pretty with nice clean well-stocked shops, a pool with a bar, an outdoor entertainment area ,restaurants, and restrooms. The salesmanship can sometimes get a little intense--understandable since I believe the only people who shop there are from the ships. The area outside of the created "port" falls off rapidly to rather poor areas and spots along the beach that are marred by litter. I went on a snorkeling tour which involved a hot cab ride over bumpy, dusty roads that ended in a "docK' that had definitely seen better days--it leaned in spots and there were missing boards. I could not help wishing that some of that economic development could spread out a little for the residents. That said, the snorkeling was good and the crew was efficient and friendly though I personally found the "party hearty" atmosphere a bit forced and did not appreciate having a parrot plunked down on my shoulder for the requisite souvenir photo. You have to have a lot of patience as, once again, the salesmanship for the photos is intense. Next time, I'll just snorkel off the beach near the ship. CM is not one of my favorite spots but it is not horrible.

We had the BEST time going to the little fishing village - MAJAHAUL - which is about two miles from the cruise dock in Costa Maya!

Met met the nicest people (both locals & from other cruise ships) at the beach bar in Majahaul. SO MUCH FUN! Don't know how much longer it will remain the way it is now so try to experience this place while you still can.

The beach had a roped-off area to swim. The water was warm and the beach was clean and sandy. The beach chairs were free ... just order a drink or food. There were also a couple of docks in town with snorkel tours being offered from $25 - $35 pp. Snorkel gear was also for rent.

Happy memories of this place!!!!!!!!!!

You can find great things when it is safe to wander off the beaten path. Someone on another forum said they took school supplies to the 2 schools in that little village. I hope to do that and stop at the beach if we get there in April.

My wife and I also went down to Majahaul after someone called Cecilia who owned a snorkeling tour at the Costa Maya port said they had the best snorkeling. Wow, very different from the normal cruise tours we had before but we went on the best snorkeling tour ever. A boat pulling the two floating (whatever they were) took us and another couple out and we had the best time. I wish I could remember the name of the tour. OCN or OLN or OTN, something like that.
Obviously not set up by the cruise lines or it would have been a bigger boat and much less snorkeling.
Let us know if anyone can remember the name of the people there or if they have a web site.
