Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what there is to do in Costa Maya if not an excursion. We are planning to maybe take a taxi around, see some ruins...........is this easy to do on your own?

Yes, very easy to do on your own. There are taxis and buses on site to take you on whatever tour you wish. There are also bikes for rent if you wish to go into town.

read this thread

You should check the Mexico section as Costa Maya, like Cozumel, is in Mexico

On the Mexico section, there is <a href=http://www.cruise-addicts.com/forums/read.php?f=23&i=284&t=284>thread</a>

Lots of good information from the guy that runs the dive shop in the nearby village of Mahahual

If you are wanting to see the ruins, do not attempt to drive there yourself. In fact you run somewhat of a risk taking those tours independently from the pier as they are a considerable drive (I think the Chacchoben Ruins were about a 45-60 bus ride). All the other stuff sounds like its fine to do on your own. Its been a while since Ive been to Costa Maya, so maybe there are more independent ruins options now that are dependable (to get you back to the ship on time).

Are there any ruins, or anything to do besides shopping, closer than hour drive? Is Chacchoben the "main" one or the only one?We have excursions booked at every other port and want Costa Maya to be a more relaxed day........but also want to do something.I have read about restaurants and beaches and am keeping these in mind also.We live in Florida so don't really want to sit on the beach, we'd rather do something we can't do at home. Thanks
