Crock Pot

After reading many of your posts for quite some time, I broke down and purchased a 5.5 quart Rival Crock Pot. Now....I would truly appreciate some suggestions as to what to cook in it and how to cook in it.

Have a JC Penney outlet nearby and they had it on sale for $14.99, couldn't resist, but am unsure where to go from here. I am a decent cook, but have never used a Crock Pot.

Thanks for any suggestions. Have a good night and a safe week ahead.....

Today I cooked pork chops in the crock pot.

They had mixed chops on sale for 1:99 a pound. So we took the chops put them in the pot about 1pm with a can of mushroom soup and some half/half. You can use milk. I have also done this with cream of celery soup. Let it go for about 4 to five hours on low. The chops are tender, flavorful and fall off the bone. We had it with summer squash and smashed garlic mashed. Yum.

We even use ours like an oven. We don't like the Deli sliced Roast Beef. It is too garlicy and usually too rare for me.

So each week we buy an oven roast. Mike seasons it the way we like it and puts it in the crock pot for about 3 hours on high. He then takes it out and puts it in the fridge for a day uncut. We have a nice meat slicer and when it is nice and cold he then slices it really thin for sandwiches. Great way to save money and to have your Deli Roast Beef sandwiches the way you like them.

SOOO much you can do with a crock pot. Since this is your first, I would urge you to browse the little cook book that comes with it, and try a few things. Get acquainted with your pot before you go off on your own with it. It can do more than you think it can!

Food Network has a bazillion great slow cooker recipes http://search.foodnetwork.com/food/...chString=crockpot&site=food&searchType=Recipe that you can use in your pot.

You'll lot your crock pot for those days when it's too hot out to turn on the oven, for when you have to go to work and you would love dinner to be ready when you get home, or just because!

Enjoy!

I did beef stew in mine tonight. Just some stew meat, red potatoes, carrots, onions, some tomato paste and seasoning. I also make chili in it, as well as spaghetti sauce. It is also good for roasts, whole chickens, etc. etc. Couldn't live without mine! You get home from work, and dinner is ready! :)

It is also great for making pulled pork. Take the pork loin add a little coke, a can of tomatoes and let it go for several hours. When it starts to fall apart pull it with a fork and add your barbeque sauce.

If you are having company you can use it like a chafing dish to keep foods warm. There are so many options. Baked Beans, Chilli, stew, pot roasts my favorite. We use ours for just about everything.

One of our favorite crock pot recipes is Italian Beef and it is so simple.

Take a large sirloin tip roast and place in the crock pot. Take 3 cups of water and add one package of Lipton onion soup mix and 1 cup of Tone's spicy spaghetti seasonings. I buy this at Sam's Club. Mix as well as you can and pour over meat. Cook on low all night. Let the roast cool and then cut into slices and add it back into the juices and cook a few more hours. This is delicous, freezes well and makes a lot for parties.

Enjoy!

One thing I've been preparing lately in my crock pot is beef soup. I take a 4-5 lb. piece of beef (top round, lean chuck - whatever is on sale), wash it, place it in the pot whole along with a soup bone, and fill almost to the brim with water. I add veggies (fresh carrots and celery, an onion or large shallot for flavoring), a small can of diced tomatoes, seasonings to taste...and let it simmer on the lowest setting for 24 hours or more - I reset it once or twice. The flavor of the soup is rich, almost like a bouillon.

Judy - I love your and Mike's version of Deli Roast Beef. I'll have to try it. You did say/mean Coke??

I even do my corned beef, cabbage and potatoes in the crock pot....potatoes on bottom, cover in water, then the corned beef brisket then cabbage wedges on top, cover and cook on low for 8 hours. Yummy.

I alsos put pork roast in crock pot along with potatoes and baby carrots, cover with Campbell's Golden Mushroom soup and sprinkle with a bit of garlic powder and cook on low for 8 hours. Makes a wonderful roast port.

Mary Ann we use the Coke in our pot roast and pulled pork not in the deli roast beef. Yes just a can of Coke offset by either a can of tomatoes or a little ketchup. LOL It is a reciple I got from a restaurant in Boston.

You don't want the beef to break down when you are going to slice it on a slicer, The coke in pot roast and pulled pork gives a little sweetness and also breaks down the fat in the meat causing it to fall apart.

For the Deli Roast beef.......use an oven roast about 3 pounds, just add about 1/3 cup water, spray the crock with Pam, season the meat with salt, pepper or whatever you like on your deli roast beef and just cook for about 3 hours on high, if you like it rare less time. Take it out of the crock, cool to warm, wrap in foil and then put it inside a zip lock bag. Refrigerate about 7 or 8 hours and slice. Much nicer deli roast beef. If you wanted the sweeter beef add a Coke maybe 30 minutes before removing from the Crock and the flavor will be there without breaking down the beef.

Coke roasts are awsome!
I`m making one today.
1 bottom round roast
2 cans of coke (classic)
1 box or 2 envlopes lipton beefy onion soup mix.
Place beef in crockpot
add coke, soup mix put on low cook 8-9 hours. Serve over egg noodles.
Can cook on high 5 hours or until it falls apart.
Cooking time can vary depending on size of roast.
