Cruise line LIES to me about pier upgrade policy!!!

I recently inquired about upgrading a pier and its heavy discounts, and had the honor of reading replies to many members who did in fact save hundreds, if not thousands, by performing this very task. However, I recently e-mailed RCCL customer service, and this is what they gave me:

"Regarding your inquiry, if space is available on the day of sailing all staterooms are full fare at the pier. We suggest guests upgrade prior to sailing to avoid paying higher fares."

Have policies changed in such a short time, or is this response a blatant lie?

I can't remember crusing in the last year when the ship we've been on is completely full. I'd like to think an agent wouldn't blatantly lie to you, and I suspect as PH8 mentioned above - it may been more an encouragement to book what you want when you decide to cruise so you're not disappointed.

=yeah I'm with the rest on this one. The response you got probably is an attempt to get you to book early. PH8 is correct too...don't count on availability at the pier because there is a good chance the ship will be full.

I have heard from other cruisers who have tried to upgrade at the piers and did not receive a discount. They were told to had to pay the difference between their cabin the the one they wanted to be upgraded to.

Any time I've asked to upgrade at the pier, I've been told I had to pay the fare difference. I'm sure it happens, but I think it's rare. The rep probably gave you an accurate representation of RCCLs policy.

We've upgraded at the pier 3 times, twice from a D1 to a JS. Both times for a total of $400 for the cabin. The last time was on the Sovereign 4 night September 11th this year. Upgraded from an SO to a JS for $200 total for the cabin. This was a significant reduction from the JS price just before sailing.

There was a price list posted on another thread that has been in affect for the last few years.

I am sure others have been able to get it at a discounted price, but we have alawys been told it would cost us the regualr difference we would have had to pay already.

We've also upgraded at the pier and paid a discounted price. It was from an oceanview to a Cat. JS and we paid $400. It does happen, but rarely anymore. Most of the ships are sold out or only have inside & outside cabins left. RCI is encouraging you to pay ahead of time.

What I would do if I were you is wait until about 5-6 weeks before sailing and try to upgrade through your TA then. IF, and that's a BIG "if", there are any suites left, then you should get them at a discount. It won't be as good as getting the pier price, but it'll still be a lot less than those of us that pay full price 15 months in advance to get those suites.

If you're cruising on a slow time of the year, you'll have better luck.
