Cruise to Alaska

Hi,
I have cruised to Alaska twice both times on Holland America (loved HAL). I'm planning on going this July 2009 with my mom and my niece, and we're thinking about trying NCL the Pearl. We are considering booking a handicap room on Deck 4 right next to the medical center. Does anyone have any thoughts about being so close to the infirmary (noise, traffic)? Also what do you think about NCL compared to HAL?

Any input would be great!

Cindy,

the good news: the infirm is only open a few hours a day so I wouldn't think it would be a major problem but if you can find a handicapped cabin somewhere else I would consider it. I say this only because, if there were a major emergancy the infirm would be open more...

Cindy,

I have and we love it, but it is very different from HAL. We have 2 favorite lines, for totally different reasons: HAL and NCL. HAL is much more upscale, formal and subdued. The cabins are larger and we happen to think the food in the main dining rooms are better. NCL offers more activities, a laid back and very friendly crew and so many dining choices, plus, for us, freestyle works great. You do give up that reporte some love with your wait staff, but to us, being able to eat at whatever times suits us and not having to bring formal wear is worth the sacrafice. Another plus, as we see it, not being at the same table with the same people for the entire cruise can work well. There have been times, when we have had great table mates, other times we have had nothing in common with them. This can make for a very long week or 10 days to say the least. Worse, of course is rude table mates.

As friends we often cruise with put it: NCL just has more energy..By the way, we are way past middle age and still find the overall age on HAL a little too old for us, this would particularly hold true for Alaska where the age range is older to start with.

Norwegian Star obstructed room 8096

Can anyone tell me about obstructed rooms on deck 8 of NCL Star? One agent "knows nothing" about the obstruction and another customer service rep says you cannot see the ocean from these rooms due to lifeboats.
