The most important thing is to be realistic. If you are cruising on Carnival, then this child will have to be babysat by "someone" the entire cruise (except 10PM to 3AM). Is your son the kind of Dad who will expect the grandparents to handle that, or his sister or is he prepared to vacation with the child constantly in his care?Personally, I have always advised that folks wait until the child is 2 years old and able to attend Camp Carnival. Not only for the sanity of the parents, but (in this case) for the harmony of the family. I am not up on other cruise lines, like Disney which may have care for children over the age of 1 (instead of Carnival's age 2).Also, you must bring EVERYTHING the child will need. Good luck!
