Cruising to Hawaii from L.a.

If I were to fly to Los Angeles, should I allow at least a day before the cruise is to start for knowing I got there and not miss the ship?
Right now, the Spirit is the one going to Hawaii from L.A. Would my 10 year old son and I have to have passports inside the U.S?
Best way to get the cheapest possible trip?

Its always good to bring a passport. You will be stopping at least 1 port outside of the US
Probably at Ensenda Mexico.
It would be safer to come in one day earlier. You never know what could happen. besides its make
your Vacation 1 day longer.
