Can you do this on your own? Are there tour companies that take escorted tours from Anchorage? What does it cost to get into the park? How much to spend the night there?

Hi Jeana,
I worked in Alaska for a cruiseline in 2002, so here are a few things that may help you with Denali. There a very few companies that offer Denali packages from Anchorage. You can book with Princess Tours or the Alaska Railroad. They will provide train transportation from Anchorage to Denali, lodging in the Denali Village area, and possibly a park tour.
You can also book the park on your own at http://www.nps.gov/dena/index.htm. The only way into the park is through the park service. They have narrated tours that go up to 51 miles into the park, or you can take a camper bus as far as nearly 90 miles into the park. You can also drive on your own into the park to about mile 15. After mile 15, it is all unpaved road, and is open to busses only.
Most of the hotels are located about 2 miles from the park entrance, except the Kantishna Roadhouse. This is an all inclusive hotel located 80 miles inside the park. Rates run about $200 per person, per night and include bus transportation into and out of the park.
Park entrance fees are very small: less than $10 per family.

Hope this helps!
