digital camera - how much memory to take

We are taking a 7 day Alaskan cruise with a 4 day Denali pre-cruise tour and then spending three days in Vancouver. We have two 128* chips (or whatever they are called) for the digital camera. I think that gives us about 256 + pictures. Will that be enough or should we buy some more?

I took 800 pictures on my last 7 day Alaskan cruise. Many ships offer a service to download the card to a CD for a minimal fee.

ships do offer to burn your pictures to cd or to give you prints. that should be enough memory. especially if you are going to combine that with film.

I suppose it all depends on how many photos you want. 256 photos is a bit more than I took and I sure didn't miss anything. And remember that you can plug the camera in to the TV in the room and delete the duds so you can actually snap more than the 256. Just be careful not to hit the "delete all" button.

You can also get more photos if you lessen your resolution. But of course too low of resolution won't blow up to 8 x 10 well.

Hi- does anyone know if they offer the CD download on the Radiance of the seas? I only have one 128 MB card, but only want to buy another if I have to. Thanks for any responses, Griffen

128 mb holds a lot of photos at mid resolution. You could probably get a 64mb card for the price that the ship will charge for downloading to a cd.

I got 200+ photos on a 64 and 16mb card(s) at mid resolution and was quite happy with the results.

Another idea would be to go to a camera shop or drug store in Juneau or one of your other stops and get it transferred there. That would be cheaper than the ship too I would think.

Whatever size memory card you decide to take, remember one other thing. Make sure you take enough BATTERIES or it will not matter what size memory card you take. Batteries on the ship are quite expensive. Anyway, I am taking a 126mb card and 96mb card. I think that will be plenty.

Yes, batteries are critical. If your camera uses AA's make sure to get rechargable spares. And if the camera has a special battery pay for a spare. You don't want to miss any shots because your battery died.

I never use the LCD screen as a viewfinder either. The viewfinder eats batteries up. Most cameras now have optical viewfinders.

I know there is so much to take pictures of. but I think about who is going to look at 200+ pictures. I pray for your neighbor and will send plenty of booze in mouthwash bottles for when you return home.

Good point about sympathy for neighbor, but reality is that with a digital camera you tend to take a great many pictures - more than you would ever take with a film camera - but we then look them over on the camera and delete some and review the rest at home on the computer, edit those we like if necessary and keep only about 25% of what we take. You never know for sure which of the photos will really come out great. In South Beach last year I got up befor dawn and took a number of shots of sun rise - nothing looked too great when I was taking them but a few turned out spectacular.

Take a lap top computer on the trip with you. Put all your pictures on the computer daily. You can shoot 1000 if you want. Take the pictures off the camera, recharge the batteries and keep shooting.

Don't worry about your neighbors. The photos are for your memories. As mentioned above you can isolate the best photos and show friends and family. The balance will be for you only.

Yes, the Radiance will burn you a CD and its was cheap, I believe about $14.00 last Sept.

I can not imagine you have more memory than what a CD will hold since most are around 700 mb.

I purchased 2 512 cards which left plenty of memory. Didnt have to download them just took them home. Yes the Coral will burn a CD.

Don't forget that you can also have a CD done when you get into a town. Every place you stop will probably have camera places close to the docks.

That's my technique. Then you can view and edit them during any down-time that you may have on the ship or airports/planes.

But.....I'm pretty much a computer geek anyway ;).

I don't know whether I'd pack a laptop just to download pictures. Sounds like an extra card may be your best option if you have to pay $14 for a CD (which costs maybe a nickel for the blank). I got a 128 MB SD card at WalMart on sale the day after Thanksgiving for $14.98 -- and you'll be able to re-use the card. My laptop has an SD card slot and CD burner and I'd do it for free for you. Maybe you can keep your eye out for a friendly computer geek who would burn your CD if you give him a blank.
