Digital Cameras

Hello All,

I am thinking of buying a digital camera. Can anyone tell me how do the celebrity ships (like Constellation) photo shops develop photos from a memory card, do they copy the photos into a CD. Till now I used regular cameras and developed on the ship, I noticed that there is a machine/computer stand for digital cameras, but I don’t not what exactly it is for.

Thanks in advance,
Sima

You do not need to have the photos developed at all. Get an extra memory card. I'd suggest at least 64meg (about 200 "photos" at mid range resolution).

You can view your photos directly from the camera, or better yet plug the camera into the cabin TV (all cameras come with the connector...it's easy) and view that way. You can also delete the duds this way and have more room on the card. Most cameras have slide show programs built in as well I think.

When you get home you can download to a computer for viewing. The camera will come with a photo viewer program to set up slide shows, etc.

If you want hard copy prints of your favorites (why bother printing so-so shots right?) you can print on your home printer with photo paper. If you don't have a printer than Target stores or any photo dept. will have a setup to print from the memory card.

And you can put them on a cd as well if you have a cd burner and most computers have that if it's newer than about 5 years.

My guess is also that if the ships can develope from the memory cards they'll overcharge you.

And a digital camera hint. Get extra, spare rechargable batteries. You'll regret it if you don't.

Digital is certainly the best way to go this day and age....good luck.

Also another tip....get at least 2.1 megapixels. This size can be printed very sharply up to 8 x 10 size without quality reduction.

halfdome86... Thanks for the info. My husband and I just purchased an Olympic740. It has a 10 optical zoom lense and has 3.2 mega pixels. Our first digital ever! We plan to take it on our cruise on the Mariner of the Seas in Feb., so I am soaking up as much knowlege as I can get before now and then. Thanks! :)

You'll love it. Play with it as much as possible so you're comfortable with the features and you'll have a great time with it.

Did you get the extra batteries and memory?

Olympic makes great cameras.

Pack the instruction book that came with the camera when you go on the cruise.

BP makes a great comment....bring the manual. I found things I could do with my camera after I'd had it over a year and only because I had the manual with me.

Not sure about your Olympus but my Fuji's manual was small enough to fit into a small camera bag. My wife has a Canon and her manual is big so she copied pages with information she thought she might need and brought those along.

I thinik I read where Celebrity will take your media card and download it to a CD for about $15. At 750 MB /CD that would be good. I would however carry enough media cards to support my trip. Never can tell when their equipment isn't woking. It is something to think about if you have something happen to some memory cards.
I just don't know if they will store your pictures from your media until you get 700 MB and then download. I haven't used this service.
If you can usually buy memory cards in some ports in Alaska. There also was a shop in Juneau I think that you could go in and down load your media to a CD and thus erase your cards to recover more space. Be sure and check the CD to be sure the pictures are copied before you erase your cards. An unfamiliar computer could fool you. I have a Canon S40 (3:1 Zoom) with 16 MB, 2 x64 MB, 128 MB and 256 MB compact flash cards. I guess I won't be getting that 10:1 Olympus zoom because I would have to buy all new cards.

My wife's camera is also the Canon S40. She has the 256 compact flash and she took over 250 photos at mid-range and higher resolution (not including the erased duds) and still had plenty of room left.

So I would think that with a decent amount of memory there would be no reason to pay the $15 to transfer while on the trip.

I can't remember if the shops on ships sold the memory cards although I would assume so. But now days even drug stores sell them so it wouldn't be a problem to get a new one I would think while in port.

That 10x zoom does sound nice, doesn't it?

And good advice about confirming the transfer is complete before erasing the card. In fact I'm so paranoid, I wait to erase the card until I have it copied to the hard drive on the computer and a CD once I'm home.

Also when deleting the duds on the trip make sure you don't accidently hit the erase all area. Ouch! I did that while experimenting with my camera pre-cruise. Fortunately for me they were only practice/test shots so it was no big deal in that case.

halfdome86... We finally got our new camera via UPS this week. Yes we did purchase the Xtra stuff. Can't wait to use it somewhere more interesting than my yard. :)

I have a 740 camera and it takes great pics. I tore insturtion book so I carry only the English part I can read. Fanny pack works as a case for me,with book-extra set batteries-battery charger and I bought extra memory card. Costco=$34. for 128mg Smart media. Office Max often has discount on cards. I have a 64mg card and today plan to buy 128mg to go with it. Will go on 28 day trip and would rather carry extra cards than wish I -----. Camera sure has a lot of buttons -doesn't it?

I find the fanny pack idea works great as well.

These cameras do so much but one thing I like is they can work as a simple point and shoot too.

As Love The Sea is doing, get out and play with the multi-shot and portrait and manual override type features. It's fun. I'm still discovering features on my camera that I didn't realize I had. And since the larger 128 cards hold so much you can even take the same shot in color, sepia, b/w, vivid color and not worry about wasting "film".

Most cameras seem to have the ability to take mini-videos now. .AVI files. This is fun but it is still better IMHO to use a camcorder for your movie needs. And the .AVI videos eat memory too

Make sure you bring a few extra extension chords for all the charging (cell phones, camera batteries, walkie talkies, shavers, etc) and bring a few extra memory cards.

I personally carry a few 512 meg cards to insure enough space.

I take a million pics but each night over cocktails I go thru all the pics and delete most of them. So, dont save all the pics,, be selective.

And,, buy Nikon!!!!

I'm so un-techie! I bought a Canon GS something 4.something mega(hey I told you I'm not techie!). It's supposed to be a great camera. And I've got all the bells: 528 cards, etc. Took it on my Oct Horizon cruise. Didn't realize until I was ready to board that I had brought everthing except the memory. card! So I just said sc--w it and bought disposables!!
I'm leaving 3/1, again on Horizon and at the top of my list it says: MEMORY! Now I'll probably forget the camera! LOL!
