dinner attire

How strict are they about dinner attire?
On casual nights, can men and boys wear dress shorts and golf shirts?
On "smart casual" would collared shirts and dress pants suffice?
Do you think my 10 year old son needs a jacket for formal night?
We are travelling around Italy and Slovenia, and would prefer to pack light.

Thanks

Q: What are the dress codes onboard?

A: There are three distinct types of evenings onboard: casual, smart casual and formal. Suggested guidelines for these nights are:
Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women
Smart Casual: Jackets and ties for men, dresses or pantsuits for women
Formal: Suits and ties or tuxedos for men, cocktail dresses for women

The number of smart casual and formal nights is at the ship's discretion.

We appreciate your usual parental guidance and cooperation in observing these easy guidelines with your children.

I really think dress codes are relaxing somewhat, I don't think you'll be throw overboard if you don't comply completely.

Shorts of any kind are not appropriate in the main dining room at dinner for men. Young boys (not teenagers) can wear dress shorts at any time. You can wear shorts at lunchtime, but long pants or a kilt/lavalava at dinner for gents. You can wear shorts in the Windjammer for dinner if attire drives your dining desires.
