Could anyone tell me what happens the first time we leave the boat and go onto U S soil. Obviously we have gone through Canadian customs flying in from the U K but are there any forms etc to fill in when we start our holiday in Alaska? Also do we have to carry our passports with us at all times?

You might want to get a bit more specific. Where are you boarding the ship for instance? what ship and what route?

All foreign folks clear customs in Vancouver at the airport to enter Canada. You then clear US customs at the pier to board your ship. So you are then free to cruise the coast as a cleared person. Shud your ship dock in Canada again eg. Prince rupert its a pre clearance thing (like doing an island in the Caribbean or Mexican port) and of course since you went through US customs when you boarded you are cleared for all the Alaska ports already. I understand that there is now an agreement with Customs/Immigration and airllines that on the return you can get boarding passes before you land in Vancouver for your flights and everything/everybody goes directly to the airport without passing "go" so to speak. This info of course is subject to the whims of travel/immigration and other changes so I do not swear buy it. If you were going to spend time in Canada on your return you would have to pass through Canadian customs and immigration of course. ...........& of course since most of the folks on the cruise are US bound on their return that flight info/boarding passes stuff may only apply to them..I have not heard from anyone coming back this season on whether that really works or not.

Thanks for the info. On the way out from the UK we are landing in Toronto on the way to Calgary to join the Rocky Mountaineer, then to Vancouver to pick up the boat. On the way back we are flying from Vancouver to Toronto to do Niagara Falls etc . Really looking forward to it all.

If you land in TO you may have to clear customs for Canada there...!! but for sure when you get off in Calgary so the Vancouver end of your trip will just be a taxi from the Depot to whereever you are staying. The depot is basicly downtown but it's not really a walking area. Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip. The Falls are pretty neat. I rank them just below The Grand Canyon on the scale of the things I've seen. Of course there are larger and greater falls but they are hard to get too.
