On Saturday May 22nd we just got off of the Diamond that sailed to Alaska. There have been 2 sailings and the disembarkation process is VERY SLOW. We were on the sailing that had the mishap in Victoria. The previous sailing still had passengers getting off at 1:00 p.m.

Hopefully they will improve on Embarkation and disembarkation. We waited 3-6 hours for both. I would be concerned with a 10:30 flight.

Hi Fusco,
I'm curious as to what mishap happened in Victoria? Care to share?

Allison,

the wind pushed the ship against the dock. We scraped the hull and possibly did some damage to the propeller. We weren't able to get off in Victoria, and we arrived in Seattle the next day at around Noon. The following cruise didn't leave until around Midnight, and they won't go to Juneau or Victoria. Instead they received $500 shipboard credit. Here is a clipping I found posted:

High winds push new Alaskan cruise ship into pier

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

VICTORIA, British Columbia -- High winds pushed a new cruise ship into the end of a pier here when it tried to dock Friday evening.

The Diamond Princess aborted the usual mooring procedure and tied up across the outer end of Pier A, waiting for the winds to drop.

"You could hear the scraping and the crunching," said witness John Selman, who was out at the tip of the breakwater when the ship passed a few yards away.

Paint was scraped off the starboard side of the ship.

"To my understanding there were no injuries," said Michael Cormier, harbor authority CEO, who was at the pier for a ship welcoming ceremony that was canceled because of the mishap.

The master and B.C. pilot planned to sit tight and wait for the wind to ease before moving, he said.

The vessel, which can carry 2,670 passengers, was southbound after making its first trip on the Alaska run.

The ship was en route to home port in Seattle.

Considering the way things have been going there is a fair chance you will not make it. I was on the May 15th cruise, the one with the accident. Had the ship not wrecked, there was a change in the disembarkment procedure the night before. You will arrive into port the same time and pier as the Oosterdam, meaning more them 5 thoudand people getting off the ship at the same time. Now our changed (prior to accident) instructions said that disembarkation would start at 6:15 am and end by 10:00 am. The week before started disembarkation at 8:00 am. You may have heard that the May 7th Diamond did not finish disembarkation until around 1:30 pm. But the good news is that most airlines will let you go standby the same day without penalty. When we missed our 10:20 am flight with Alaska we were placed on the next flight without problems.

We were on the May 8th cruise and got off the ship at 7:45. We were able to do that because we carried our own bags off the ship. If you do that and take a cab to the airport rather than the bus, you might make your flight.

I just returned from Alaska on the Diamond. Saturday, June 5, passengers carrying their own luggage began disembarking at 7:40 a.m. Color-coded disembarkation began at 8:05. See the Passenger Services desk early in your cruise to request early disembarkation--take them your flight information. We requested this, as we had a 10:50 a.m. flight and the staff was happy to accommodate. We were at our gate at the airport at 10:00 a.m.

Good luck and have a wonderful cruise!

JAT - Great review of your cruise. We were on the 5/15 cruise and also had Sermvit as our cabin steward. He was exceptional and we also submitted a comment card for him.
