Do you feed your dog leftovers from the dinner table?

My DH would give our other two dogs leftovers from the dinner table (from his plate! ::eek:) because he felt it wasn't going to waste then. But it sure went to THEIR waists because they were both over weight. It was really difficult for Kirby to get around with her bone cancer because of her weight, poor thing.

When we got Kiefer I was adamant about NO HUMAN FOOD, NO LEFTOVERS! He does get meat, so if I have extra steak or turkey or chicken, I will dice that up and mix it with his dry food, but he does not get things like lasagna, or meat loaf, or pancakes or mashed potatoes, or anything like that. He's slim, trim, healthy, and REALLY appreciates a nice neck and gizzard broth mixed with his food.

What is the rule in your house?

I don't own a dog, but from being at friends and family get-togethers I find that feeding their dogs table scraps has created obnoxious beggers who are constantly trying to get something off the guest's plate. This behavior is offensive to me as a guest. They think it's cute.

One particular dog had to be rushed to the vet hospital twice because of ingesting chocolate and had to have his tummy pumped.

I have read that it creates an unhealthy diet and attributes to diabetes and obesity in dogs.

Every once in awhile I will give my cats tuna water or a small amount of chicken, but it is always away from the table and in their own dishes. I don't want them to associate our food with theirs.

Okay, I am now off my soapbox....

Ours get their dry dog food mixed with a little (very little) plain chicken or plain beef. They also like raw vegetables as treats (carrots, broccoli stalks, asparagas ends etc.) The only one who ever feeds them from the table is my Mother. At least it only happens on Sunday evening and she is the only person they every "beg" from! It's my Mom...what can I say? ::eek:

I guess dogs are much like people to an extent. What may be bad for one may not be bad for another.
Our last dog was a Beagle/ Dachshund mix that lived to be 17 years old.
We had to have him put to sleep because of a series of problems but none were weight related.
He ate just about anything and everything. Loved wieners, cheese, popcorn,
---you name it and he ate it. He loved to go for rides in the car and sit in the front seat.
Not long before he had to be sent to dog heaven I took him to Baskins-Robins ice cream parlor and got him a double dip of strawberry ice cream in a cup. He sat in the front floor and licked it clean and I'm sure he enjoyed every lick.
He was never on any type of diet and apparently what he ate over the years didn't adversely affect him too much or he would have never made it to 17 years. After 10 years I still miss the old boy. By the way, his name was " Frito "--named by my kids who were small at the time we got him and because he loved to eat the fritos they would feed him !! :)

We get a super premium kibble for the lads.
They do get a few crumbs from our plates but not much.
Sometimes they get lucky when I am trimming meat but then I subtract a bit of dinner kibble from their allotment. Once and a while I will give them a raw chicken neck for dinner. I make kidney jerky for them, which is something I need to do very soon. I saw some chicken feet at the Mexican market so I might get some for the guys if they behave. I'll have to look and see what other things they have there.

I use to always give my dogs left overs anything and everything. But Buck is very sensitive to too much "people food" so he and Georgie get very little...maybe some meat trimmings or a few pieces of meat left over. They do scrounge a cookie or too from the Grandkids though and are great at keeping the floor around the kids chairs clean :lol

No, as a rule, we don't. I will at times put raw carrots or some such thing in her bowl. She too loves raw and cooked veggies and sometimes I will mix it with leftover rice and give her. But this is always around Her dinner time, not after ours, where she might start expecting it. I refuse to have a dog sitting there staring at me while I am eating my food, expecting a handout.

If we have a t-bone steak - which is seldom, then afterwards D will take her out into the yard and let her have at it. :)

my cats don't like table food

sometimes they get tuna water -- they love that

the animals know people food is not for them, so they don't beg, and even if I offer a small piece of it, like chicken, they don't like it so much... When we're eating they expect us to feed them their kibble (how dare *we* eat while they're waiting) :lol . We will feed them when we're done usually and sometimes before we eat. Cats are a different "animal" both metaphorically and physically than dogs. :) <img src=http://www.msgweb.nl/emoticons/cat.gif>

Ours wil get leftover steak (or the fat) cut up and in their dish with regualr food. They also get leftover eggs on Sunday mornings. Always in their dish (well almost always). If Molly is being particualrly hard on Eddie, I let him eat it off the plate right in front of her, just to show her he is still the alpha dog. Doesn't bother her one bit, she is still a rotten little brat to him.

Our Beloved Scooter had to have only dry kibble but we had to add meat and cheese to it to bribe him..Food was just not a huge priority to the bugger.. he adored meat "gimmes" from our plates..and that was after we finished eating...and prime rib, pork chop bones and such were a special later "after supper " treat..

but the only rule breaker I had was he =loved mashed potatoes and Daddy Mark would always give him some off his plate AFTER supper.. I still badly miss my pupper Scooter..:(.. sigh.. Joanne

Pucci eats prescription dog food - Hills canned K/D. He is only permitted an occasional table treat under my supervision - little spoonsful of my homemade beef broth on his food, some plain pasta cut into tiny bits...and little plain vanilla or lemon cake sprinkled on his food. That's it.

I grew up with a very distance ancestor of Pucci's. :grin A poodle :). My mom did not know from dog food, other than what she fed us.

The dog would get steak on the grill, while we would have broiled hamburgers. My dog was addicted to M&M's.
My dogs favorites were pizza, spaghetti and ice cream. Yes she eventually passed from diabietes at the ripe ole age of 14.

My parents purchased a microwave when they first came out. It was to heat the dogs food ONLY !!!!!!!! It was not to be used for our own personal use, just in case our dog wanted to eat right then and there.

Most kids are spoiled when they were younger, we werent, but my dog was........

Our dogs only get dog food. Their treat is a dog "cookie". The cats only get cat food and rarely a bite of grilled chicken. The bird gets bird food, wheat thins, peas, popcorn. He should eat fruit but he just turns up his beak and goes away. We figure that if they don't eat people food then they will not beg.

Our dogs do get scraps but not directly from the table. As far as dog food goes they get only Iams, a mix of large breed with glucosamine and lamb and rice. They get no wet dog food at all because it gave Sassafras a bad skin alergy. Her hair would fall out and her skin would get all oozie and gross. Poor baby was misserable. As soon as we cut out the wet it went away. They do get some people food. They love veggies and they get some meat scraps and as Cutie said...mashed potatoes! I admit they get the occasional potato chip or doritto. Shame on me. That doesn't affect Sassy's skin though and they are not overweight. Well...Bubba is 200 lbs but he's in good shape, not overweight! LOL. If they ever start to get heavy we will cut it out. A weight problem is a terrible thing for a large breed.
Oh....they love soft taco shells too.

Suer - although I'm sure it wasn't funny to you, I must admit that I'm sitting here snickering. While I would not have denied anything to my 2-footed children had I been blessed with any, I'm guilty of doting on Pucci (and Topaz before him)... I don't deny it, nor would I change a thing. Like most parents of furbabies, I love Pucci very much. :loveya

My cats refuse to eat people food, except when I get a roast beef sandwich and bring it home, Maxie has to have some. And once in a while he will eat chicken. I admit I would feed them scraps if they liked them.

Now, on the other hand, the little blue eyed terror who came to live with us will eat anything. I have to keep looking over my shoulder to make sure he is not about to mug me to get my dinner. Do I share? Do you need to ask?
