Do you have to give your luggage to the porters?

I have been on two cruises and have always given our luggage to the porters when we arrived at the port.

I was wondering if anyone knows if you are allowed to just take all of your luggage with you in the terminal and then carry it on the ship yourself??? This way we will have our luggage on time and wont need to worry about getting it late on the first day.

We have always just taken carry-ons with whatever we wanted to change into and personal things like medications. We have never had a problem in 10 cruises. Its not like your luggage will be misplaced like an airline might do.

NOOOOOOO :) as many of the other posters will tell you mY luggage stays with me at all times... in the 2 cruises i have been on princess and carnival there was a couple on each ship in which their luggage was lost, i pack everything i need in a 22 inch carryon ( see post "best packer ever" and the picturesposted on this site)

You do not have to give your luggage to the porter :)

You can carry your luggage on if it fits through the security x-ray machine. mlzangel78 says they pack everything in a 22 inch suitcase, that would fit through the x-ray machine where the passengers board. If it does not fit through that machine it goes down below where it is put through a larger x-ray machine.

The x-ray machines at the entrance to the ship for passengers takes the smaller luggage just like the secruity at airports when you head into the gates.

Taking your luggage with you is do-able. Just pack lightly- Know that if you get onboard early your cabin may not be ready yet so you may have to cart all that stuff around with you- people do drop stuff off in the cabins but the cabin is NOT secured until 1pm. ALso- elevators move very slowly during embarkation. If the suit case does not fit through the xray amchine you will be asked to take it out to the porter..then start all over again. YUCK

Luggage can get lost on the ship. On the Glory in March they kept announcing for several days to keep an eye open for a black suitcase. I felt sorry for that person, what a way to start a cruise. Just make sure to have sercure name tags. Somebody grabbed my husband's bag when we got off the Glory. We waited forever, finally left without it. Somebody called us the next day, she had picked up his suitcase by mistake and if we had hers.

When we sailed on the VOyager 6 people did not get their luggage until Wednesday- that luggage was sitting in other peoples cabins who never told anyone that luggage in their room was not thiers.

We kept our luggage on Victory/Halifax and it wasn't even a hassle in NY where you might expect it to be.

We got to the pier about 11:30am and as staff returned from lunch they started up and checked us in. Same scanning as at the airport, then we wheeled our one bag each up to the Lido and lunched. Found our rooms were ready too so we got pretty well squared away long before muster.

Packing tip for ya', put one complete change of clothing in his bag and one complete change of his in yours and in a pinch you're assured of at least one ready change if need be. Got the tip from Cruise Diva's site.

If you want to carry your luggage on the ship, it MUST fit through the scanners at the security check point (and they are about the same size as those at airports for the carryons.) If your luggage does not fit through that scanner you WILL and MUST check your luggage with the porter outside to get it on the ship that way.
