Does RCL give free upgrades at the last minute???

I'm booked on the Voyager's last Caribbean cruise that's departing Saturday. The last time I checked cabin availability just three days ago (I always do "mock" bookings to see how full a ship is on a particular sailing), almost a dozen junior suites were available, as they were since last year.

However, in the matter of just these last couple of days, absolutely NONE remain. I'm wondering if this is the result of RCL upgrading pax a couple days b4 the cruise, or the other unlikely option of a dozen of last minute bookings (b/c there are still lots of balcony and oceanview cabins available).

Numerous reasons on why that can happen, anything from passengers paying for a larger cabin, to RCI offering upgrades to a computer glitch, or last minute bookings, last minute group bookings. PH8 has a good thought too.

I am currently booked on a HAL cruise for this November, I too do the mock booking thing and ALL the suites have been sold out for months. At the price of those cabins it sure makes me go hmmmmmm whats going on.

RCI is not in the habbit of giving free upgrades to anyone. They would rather sell them at the pier.

I was bumped up a modest catagory during my cruise on Navigator this past January. But it was not a last minute deal.

I would also like to know how to go about receiving free cabin upgrades. If I were to inquire at the check-in point at the port, would I have any luck? I have two cabins (adjoining) in the promenade - 8th level. Any chance of upgrading to other adjoining or side by side cabins?

I paid for my upgrade at the pier. I was lucky enough that they still had cabins available and my sailing wasnt sold out.

kromanator if cabins are available it is possible for an upgrade, free well who knows. Ships are selling out

another major factor: RCI opens cruises, usually within 4 weeks of sailings to what are known as interline bookings.
These are discount rates vailable ONLY to travel industry personnel, (airline employees, etc).
These rates are not even available for viewing by the general public and the vast majority of travel agents cannot access them. Only special interline agencies have access.
Additionally, this becomes the time that the cruise industry offers agent rates to your local T/A (although they are ofen avialable well before the 4 week period).

RCI has gotten smart. They know that we the traveling public caught on to the upgrade game at the pier, so they now SELL those upgrades vesus giving them away..as a stock holder I like that LOL

Sometimes there are upgrades at the pier, sometimes not. In all cases I'm aware of, at the pier, you'll need to pay for them (IF there are any left.). If you really want them, and can afford them, get the upgrades before you go, and have the peace of mind you'll have the staterooms you really want.

I would think your travel agent would bewilling to help you here.
