Dramamine causes drowsiness...bonine is not supposed to. Good "home remedies" are eating apples (the pectin in the apple peel serves as a natural remedy). Also ginger. Ginger snap cookies, ginger ale or candied ginger that you can buy at Trader Joe's)

Happy Cruising,

I just returned from the Miracle yesterday. I'm 9 weeks pregnant, and had an awful time with morning sickness. I wore the wristbands and they helped wonders! Assuming you are not pregnant, but I'm sure they would work the same for motion sickness. If you do go this route, buy them before you leave..they are $16 on the ship. And you can most certainly drink with these on...there is no medication involved. Good luck!

Bonine is the best option, imho. The wrist bands may work but you have to wear them constantly and the "ball" in the band has to be in the exact spot for them to work. Bonine is non-drowsy and you CAN drink with it.

I vote for Bonine. I have used it for years without becoming sleepy. And yes, you can drink with it. It isn't prescription. Just pick it up at your local WalMart.

Just before we board, I pop one. And then I take one every morning like clockwork...whether it looks like we are going to be needing it or not. Prevention is the key. You can take a second one if you need it during the day, but I rarely have needed to. I have "inner ear" that flares with being exposed to smoke and Bonine still works (along with my antibiotics).

I can't speak to any other remedy since Bonine is all I have used.

on our last cruise we took meclazine
this is a generic form of bonine
my husband and I each took one every morning and
we never had any problems with motion sickness
Even after our cruise some of the other people we were with
had problems with motion but we were both fine
on our two previous cruises we were both queasy at times

i will do this every time we travel now
this is your vacation and why take the chance of
not feeling good

and yes we drank with it

Bonine and Meclazine are the same. You may have to ask the pharmacy counter for it because of theft issues in stores. It is over the counter though. I take it in the mornings while cruising. I start taking it before I ever leave the drive way. No question then. I do sometimes have issues the first day or so with loose bm's. Nothing to discourage me from taking the med.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and it's not a train!!!

I've taken both the low drowsy dramamine and the meclazine. Both put me to sleep.
On the conquest I took nothing and was just fine. My husband wore the wrist bands and was just fine.

I took the meclizine on my first cruise. I was sick when I got on from staying in a very stale smoking room at the motel the night before. Had such a head ache, so took them jsut to be safe. I was fine and never took them after the 2nd morning. They are not expenisve. You do have to ask the at the pharmacy at WalMart as they are behind the counter but you do not need an RX.

Bonine has always worked great for me. I have never been sea sick. I start it the day before and take it again on the day we leave port and again on the first full cruising day. Then I am good to go. Important to start taking it before the cruise starts. It is much harder to treat the symptoms once they have already begun! Better to get the medicine on board -- or rather in your system -- before the motion starts!! :)

another vote for bonine. And I always take it ahead of time and keep taking it for a day or 2 after I get home to help with the post-cruise movements I have. (still feels like I'm on a ship, especially when I shower!).

What about the patch, no one has mentioned that. Any side effects with that? I don't have a problem with motion on the boat at all or any motion for that fact. The problem is the week after at home, I can barely stand. To bend over to tie my shoes is terrible, I feel as though I am going to fall over. I thought about trying the patch while on the ship on my next cruise to see if this helps the problem. Does anyone else feel that way after the trip? If so, what helps? Thank you

I have always taken Dramamine. They have a non-drowsy formula now that works about the same. Other tip I heard to avoid sickness is, avoid large amounts of liquids, and always keep your stomach full which isn't hard on a cruise.

I always felt that way after my previous cruises
the ship was rocking for weeks
but this time neither I nor my husband had it
and we took meclazine from the day we left home til
the day we got back

our friends on the other hand complained for about a
week

note: I did feel that rocking while we were in our first port
but only when I was in long skinny shops

I think which would be best may depend upon the person using it.

I tried bonine on our last cruise...it didn't work well enough for me, I had to go to the Purser's desk and get some dramamine.

When hubby and I were on our first cruise I didn't even think about sea sickness, even though I know I'm prone to it, so I wasn't prepared at all. Got REALLY sick the first night out. Next morning one of the crew saw me looking so GREEN and suggested we callt he ship's doctor and get a shot for it. I don't know what it was, but I got the shot and within 20 minutes I had my sea legs and didn't need anything for the rest of the trip. Plus you could drink (although I don't drink much).

I'm probably going to take dramamine this next time, with theknowledge that if it doesn't work, there's always the ship's doctor to give me a shot!
