Elation question

I have read a couple of posts re: the elation that I have questions about. I read that the elation is very smokey. I ask because I can't be around a lot of smoke and if it is bad I would rather choose another ship. Also, Is the Elation a bad ship. I have not read a lot of good reviews about it. What is your opinion?

Any ship can be smokey. All ships will be non smoking in the dining room and interior dining areas of the lido buffet as well, the outside lido areas will usually have one side designated as smoking and the other non. Most lounges except for the main show lounge will allow smoking as will the casino, this is just not an issue with Elation, it is fleet wide.
The solution is just finding the good areas and the bad areas and adjusting accordingly if you are real sensitive to smoke.
The Elation along with the Paradise was commissioned in 1998 and was the last of the Fantasy class ships for Carnival, and if memory serves has had a drydock referb at some point and thirteen years is not old for a cruise ship.
As far as the ship being good or bad....... I haven't been on it since 1998 so probably not a good judge of current condition.

I was on Carnival Elation in July 2010 and enjoyed it. We didn't find it smoky at all, other than the one lounge in which smoking was permitted, but that's to be expected. There were plenty of smoke-free venues we could go to if it bothered us. (I can't comment on the casino, though.)

We've been on many cruises in the past 21 years, including several on HAL and Celebrity, and still enjoy Carnival. The ship is due for a drydock, as bOB mentioned, to add a water park and more balcony cabins, yet she appeared to be in fine shape when we were onboard.

I have cruised twice on the Elation. Most recently in March 2010. I found the ship much as I had left her back in 2000. A few improvements. i would not call it smokey or bad...enjoy your trip!

We were on the Elation for New Years 2011. I hate smoke and did not find it smokey at all. A large percentage of passengers seemed to be local to Alabama or states surrounding and there were many large groups. Hopefully you love Southerners (I am from SC  )Elation is an older ship but we found it to have have high value for price paid. We enjoyed the trip but do not hold it to the standard of the newer megaships. Food was good, staff was pleasant, shore excursion desk was helpful, and actually the people at the concierge desk were the nicest we have experienced.

We have a September 10 cruise booked on the Elation. It will be our second time on the ship and our second cruise out of Mobile. Our first cruise on the ship was in 2000 out of San Pedro, CA. Rita is allergic to smoke and we do not remember any issues with smoking on the ship. Our first cruise out of Mobile was on a sister ship, the Fantasy. We like to dance and the problem we had on the Fantasy was all the lounges had smoking. We tried to get a table near the entrances where it was not as bad. We are hoping the Elation is not as smoky as the Fantasy was.
Incidentally for those who are not aware, Carnival is moving the Elation to New Orleans in October. Mobile will no longer have a cruise ship!

I sailed the Elation June 2010 with my wife and two sons and we all had a blast. I did not find the ship to be smokey at all. Enjoy your cruise

You will definitely not find the Elation smokey now. Not that it ever was. The Fantasy Class ships are now the most restrictive with smoking. Areas to avoid are the Disco, some sections of the Casino, and the Starboard side of the open Lido and Verandah Decks. I agree with the previous poster about the Elation having the nicest concierge/GSD that I have ever experienced as well.
