Hello all,...I've really enjoyed reading all of your posts on Holland America. Sue and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary by sailing on our first ever cruise..we're really excited. We'll be on the Zaandam november 15th to western caribbean, and hope to make a lot of new friends. Now, I love to take pics and was wondering if electric outlets on hal ships are compatible with my digital camera battery charger, or if I will need any special plug or adapter. I've heard that europe uses different type of outlets than the usa, so I thought I'd check to make sure.
Also, can we make reservations for shore excursions through hal ahead of time before the cruise? or do we have to wait til we board the ship? (We have a regular outside cabin, if that matters). We plan on doing some snorkeling, and possibly the atlantis submarine ride sounds like fun. Thanks. Dave

The plugs in the cabins will be fine for all of your electrical needs.
Depending upon which cabin you are in, there may not be that many of them. Many folks bring an electric strip with them so they can plug in two things. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT OVERLOAD as the risk of fire on a ship is sooooo dangerous.

We did the Zaandam western in April and loved it! We took several snorkeling tours and the snorkeling was great. If you choose to, you will be able to make your reservations before you go on the HAL web site. We waited until we were on the ship and didn't have any trouble getting room on the snorkeling tours. We especially loved the one in Montego Bay. A catamaran picked us up right at the pier and took us to a reef where we snorkeled from the boat for about an hour, then it took us to Margaritaville for about 30 mins. It was a neat place to have drinks and get a bite to eat...and it had a great view. From there you can choose to take a cab back to the ship or return on the cat. I don't know if you have your own gear, but one thing I would recommend is that even if you don't bring all your own gear, you bring your own snorkel. It isn't necessary since they provide all the gear, but you might want to consider it! (You don't know where that snorkel may have been before you get it!)
Congratulations on the anniversary and your first cruise!

Thanks sail for your electrical advice...and don't worry, I will not be burning down any ships! LOL! My battery charger probably doesn't use a tenth of the voltage that a hair dryer would use. And thanks suite gurl for the snorkeling advice..and yes we DO have our own snorkel gear. It's always nice to hear a specific recommendation for activities...We will check montego bay snorkeling out. Thanks again. David

Dave & Sue -

We are also sailing for the first time 11/15 on Zaandam. We're celebrating 10yrs so we bow down to those w/ 25 under their belts. CONGRATULATIONS! Hope to run into y'all. We're currently assigned 6108 port side forward on Verandah Deck.

We booked a few excursions all online ahead of time. We'd love to find deals, but we were more concerned with getting things taken care. To us, there would be less worrying about getting to things in time and possibly missing out. We wanted as much time to learn the ship, meet lots of new people, and enjoy each other. ;p

Hope to see you aboard.
