Hi kitty,
Yes, I was just there a few weeks ago, sailed on the Glory, if you go, try the popular drink, the Pain Killer, ......lol, also their BBQ pork sandwich.....we loved St. Maarteen, more so than the other ports, have fun.....if you have anyother questions, don't hesitate to mail me.

Hi Kay; We are going to St. Maarten in Feb/04 and have not been there before. We want to explore both the Dutch and the French sides before we hit the beaches. Want can you
recommend while exploring? What is the best beach - Orient beach has been mentioned alot but what about the clothing optional thing? Just started hearing about Everyt'ing Cool Beach - which would be a better choice? Appreciate your comments.

You will probably enjoy Everyting Cool. Great beach, lots of seating out of the sun, great food and drinks. Orient Beach is not really as wild as you might have heard, probably you might run into some nudity, although it certainly will not be anything "wild and Crazy." The nice thing about Everyting Cool is that it is located right downtown in the shopping area, a nice break from spending money.. laughing.

Hi Jane,
I agree with Bruce, we were happy with just doing shopping in St. Maarteen, and sitting on the beach at Everything Cool. Have a Pain Killer for me....lol. My daughter and her hubby went to Orient Beach, it's pretty, from there they met us at Everything, after that we went shopping.....Jewerly prices are awesome!!! I"d go back tomorrow, if I could, we have booked the Western Carribean next Sept aboard the Mariner.
Have a super cruise!!!!

My family went to St. Maarten on our cruise in March of 02', and our next cruise in November goes there as well.
Last time we took a water taxi from the pier to downtown Phillipsburg ($5/pp...good all day) and walked around. It was OK...Everyt'ing Cool is right there, you can get to it relatively easily. It looked pretty nice.
This time I plan to take a cab to Marigot on the French side, and then after shopping, I want to go to Dawn Beach, which is on the eastern coast of the island, near the Dutch/French border. Have only heard good things about it, and the pictures I've seen look wonderful!

What's the age group for Everyt'ing cool? Sounds like a 20s kind of place. Looks like a party place. We are in our 40s. Will we be out of place?

Not to fear.... you will have a ball. Whatever age group is on the ship, you will probably find there. It's no wild at all... just everybody has a good time, you can do as much or as little as you want. Grab a frozen thingee or a bucket of beer and relax.

From the pics I have seen it doesn't appear very scenic. Are the pictures just the wrong view or is it just more of a beach bar then scenic?
Is there a more scenic beach that is also walking distance from the pier?

It all depends on your definition of scenic. If you're thinking long stretches of golden sand with few people and palm trees up to the water's edge with pristine snorkeling reefs and hundreds of tropical fish right off the beach, no it's not very scenic. The beach is located in the heart of downtown Phillipsburg with all the attendant development (restaurants, beach bars, casinos, hotels, etc.) around it.
Think of it more as a waterfront beach-bar kind of place. The food there is actually quite good (the conch stew is the best I've ever had anywhere), they have a HUGE array of rum-based tropical drinks (my favorite is the Big Black Banana) and live music. There are lockers for rent where you can store stuff you don't want to carry and beach floats for rent.
If you're looking for something other than this I'd suggest Orient or one of the other beaches frequently mentioned in these threads. If you want to go to town for a little shopping, have some lunch, hang at a fun place where the owners really appreciate you being there, have a few tropical thingees and listen to some decent music you can't beat it with a stick.

We've been there more than a half dozen times and I can't ever remember seeing many kids at all. However, we do spend most of our time in the bar/restaurant at our favorite table (#5, directly in front of the bar, under the big tree) eating conch chowder, drinking Big Black Bananas and looking out over the beach and the harbor. It's possible there could be a fair number of kids out on the beach that we wouldn't notice.
Come December 15 we'll be there doing exactly that yet again! ;o)
