Hi. My fiancee and I are sailing on Oceania Cruises through the Caribbean starting Nov. 23. Any suggestions on shore excursions? Should we book through the cruise ship or through a third party? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ryan

Don't have any particular advice for the islands you're visiting, but wanted to share an opinion:

My wife and I have done both (booked excursions and tooled around on our own). We usually pick one island (during the course of our week) that sounds really interesting and book a shore excursion through the cruise line. For example, in March we took an island overview tour of St. Kitts and last year we did the same on Martinique. We saw parts of the island(s) that we wouldn't have otherwise.

Then, for the rest of the cruise we're on our own. Usually it's not very expensive to hire a taxi to take you to a beach. Some of my favorite memories of our cruise trips are days at the beach. We also like to just snoop around whatever is near the ship.

We were in Aruba last March. It was REALLY hot and it was the last stop - we basically decided to walk over to some of the shops, have an ice cream and come back to the ship for a nap. We talked to other folks that really enjoyed a 4-wheeling expedition and some others enjoyed a horseback ride on the beach.

That's the beauty of a cruise - you can do whatever you want, whenever you want to!

Anway, hope you have a wonderful cruise!

Aruba has my vote as a rent a car at the pier..( you can reserve online ahead) and drive all over...........drive on the American side of the road..(Get insurance -the USA policies do NOT cover the car)...and go to the Natural Bridge, to Baby Beach for some of the best snorkeling in the world( take dog biscuits to fed the schools of fish!!..:grin..they eat out of your hands..:thumb..), The California Lighthouse.which overlooks the most beautiful inlet bays with crashing waves of tons of varied colors....we stay in Aruba 2 weeks at our timeshare every other year and it is an awesome island..safe, beautiful in an offbeat way..tons of flowers, but Divi trees and cacti, with all the cute turquoise/ and chartreuse iguanas...Enjoy the Island drink - ..the "Aruba Arriva"...:cheers and enjoy!!...:)..Joanne

Hello Barb and =welcome to cruise @ddicts..you can either go online and pre-reserve or book right off the pier..go to http://Aruba.com and they have tons of info...it's going to be several hours to go all over, they drive on the Ameriacn side of the road..it can get dusty with the Jeeps..there is NO trunk with the Jeeps..so tote and carry valuables as you leave it.....have fun..."nice to meet you" and post on the Community forum as well ...:)..Joanne
