The only advantage is that some of the excursions book up pretty quickly and booking ahead of time helps ensure you are able to get a space on those excursions you want to go on.  Also, you pay up front if you book prior to the cruise.  In my opinion it's nice to not have an extra few hundred dollars tacked on to your account at the end of the cruise.  Of coarse my preference is actually to book shore excursions that are not through the cruise line, but highly recommend by my fellow cruise addicts.
