Sailing on the Dawn Oct 19. None of the excursions appeal to us. Does anyone have any ideas for what to do in Caracas?

We visited Caracas on the Dawn in 03/02, took the Murano Glass Factory tour with a tour of an old house (can't remember whose) anyway travel on your own is not recommended. We saw armed guards all over the place. We did enjoy this tour, took us through Caracas and up into the hills, got to see all kinds of things. The drivers are crazy, no one has a drivers license and only a handful of cars are registered.

Be aware that the Dawn may NOT port in Caracas depending on the US State Dept travel advisories. If Princess deems it approriate for the saftey of the passengers Princess will sub a new port in place of Caracas. We are sailing on the Island Princess Oct 17 and could port in Colon, Panama overnight/day or go to Aruba.

I agree that Columbia is not a safe place to travel alone unless you want to chance the kidnapping threat. I don't have the www site but look up US State Department travel advisories on a search engine to read the advisories.

(Caracas is the capitol of Venezuela--nothing to do with Columbia.) I would not go off on my on there. We were there a couple of years ago and took an all day tour into town--visited the capitol bldg, did some shopping in town and went to the glass factory. Part of our tour was lunch in town at a very nice restaraunt which was very good.

It is a major city with a population of several million. The traffic can be bad but it is worth seeing. Again, I would not go off on my on, if for nothing more than getting back to the ship on time. Remember, if you are on a ships tour they will wait if the tour is late. If you are on your own they won't have any idea where you are and will not wait.
I hope you do take a tour as it is worth seeing. Anyway, if you don't like it, you can always say--hey, we went. Better than saying--we didn't get off the ship.
