Hi,
First time here! My husband and I are taking our first cruise in June 08 on Princess lines. We are doing a 2 week cruise/land tour with the land tour first.

We are just at the planning stages and I would like to know what excursions are recommended, and which ones should we not consider?

Thanks!

AS I don't usually do tours I can only comment on one.

Wht Pass and Yukon Railroad in Skagway. If your cruise does go there please consider it. A bit of History and a great experience . Several options are available.

We've done what you are doing twice, and also just cruised once - would agree that the WhitePass Railroad is great in Skagway, or if you are tired of trains after your land tour (we'd had enough the two times we'd were on the land tour), then rent a car from Avis and drive up to Carlock. You'll get to see the same scenery as the railroad, but you can stop whenever you want. At Carlock, you can also see sled dogs. If you don't go do either of those, Would also recommend the dog sled tour in Skagway.

In Juneau, you can't go wrong with Harv & Marv's whale watching, or the Princess excursion to the glacier combined with the whale watching tour. Or you could rent a car there from Rent A Wreck, and drive up to the glacier, then go to the Alaska Brewing Company for their free tour (one of our personal favorites), then drive out to the Grotto of St. Therese and see some beautiful scenery and many, many whales. In fact, you see the same whales you'd see on any of the whale watching tours, except you don't have to take the boat out.

In Ketchikan, there is the Deadliest Catch boat tour, the lumberjack show, and Dolly's House. Any tour of the totem poles is also great.

If money is no object, the flight to the glacier, dog sledding on a glacier or a bear watch are supposed to be the top of the line - I don't know personally, since these are always out of my price range.

Don't know if any of this helps, but would be happy to answer any questions if I can.

Thank you both for your help. We haven't received any info yet on our trip, and I don't know when that will be. I will look into your suggestions!

Hello!

I am writing to inquire about "the Grotto of St. Therese" in Juneau that you wrote about. Is this any chance also know as the "Shrine of St. Therese"? I would like to do exactly what you have suggested during a cruise stop this coming July. Rent-a-Wreck, etc., but before loading the address into my Garmin, want to make sure that SHrine of St. Therese and the Grotto of St. Therese are one in the same.

Thanks,

Bob

It is the same thing - and Shrine is the correct name. There is a grotto out on the point which is where I got mixed up.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

If you decide to rent a car and take the drive from Skagway to Carcross (not Carlock) and Emerald Lake, I've posted a mile-by-mile guide to the highway - you'll find it at http://MurraysGuide.com

We are indeed renting a vehicle in Skagway rather than taking the train. I am confident that your mile by mile guide will be very useful to us. Thank you for sharing this.

We opted for the 15 day "Explorer: Kenai". We're cruising south to north, departing Vancouver Saturday July 19. You?

We rented a car in Skagway and did the drive to Emerald Lake. A fabulous excursion for us.

In Juneau we did a whale watch with Captain Larry. We also did a glacier trek/helicopter tour.

In Ketchikan we kayaked and did a float plane excursion over the Misty Fjords.

Our excursions were not ship sponsored and were booked well in advance. We did not try to cut costs and have memories to last a lifetime of our port stops in Alaska.

Good luck to you in your planning.

I am not sure about Princess Cruises, but If your ship stops in Juneau, and they offer the " Mendenhall Glacier and Gardens Tour " go for it.
It's a great 2 1/2 to 3 hour tour. the gardens are very interesting even to a no-gardener like my self and the Mendenhall glacier is awesome to see.
