This outstanding wilderness expedition leads you through the beauty of Alaska as you journey through fjords, rainforests, colorful wildflowers and towering mountains, ultimately taking you face-to-face with the Davidson Glacier. Your adventure begins with an approximately 40-minute cruise through Alaska's deepest fjord aboard one of the fastest catamarans in North America. Watch for whales and sea lions along the way to a remote beach landing at Glacier Point, one of the most beautiful places in Alaska. After a short adventurous drive and a scenic, approximately quarter-mile walk, the forest suddenly opens to a breathtaking view of the glacier. A 31-foot canoe waits to take you past icebergs to the face of the blue glacier. Throughout your tour, expert guides share their extensive knowledge of this amazing area. A tasty snack box will be served on board the catamaran on the way to Glacier Point. Note: Outerwear and boots are provided. Participants must be at least 7 years of age. The trail brings you to the banks of the Taiya River, where your 35-minute float trip (with no whitewater) begins. The ride culminates at the tidal estuary where the forest gives way to fields of beach greens and wild iris. The granite walls of the fjord rise up steeply, becoming snowcapped peaks serrated by hanging glaciers. Enjoy a riverside snack before returning to your ship. Decisions, decisions....I am in the "same boat" as you trying to decided on what to do on our first trip to Alaska in a couple weeks. For Skagway we've decided on the Yukon Expedition and White Pass Railway. In Ketchikan it will be Flightseeing-Crab Feast and in Juneau Whale Watching and Mendenhall Glacier. Have fun planning!

anything that takes in the Railroad is a trip you have to do...... do a little reading up on it before you go.
As late as the mid seventies we used to get all our dry goods and stuff barged up from Vancouver and over the pass into Whitehorse and then trucked again to the various small towns. Ore from the many mines went the other way.

The railway is excellent, but with the 2 hike combos you're asking about, you don't see the best part of the train ride (the Summit) area. The Glacier Point Wilderness Safari, OTOH, gets consistent rave reviews (I haven't been on it yet).

The Skagway White Pass Rail trip is the main draw for that port. It's an amazing excursion which I'm sure you will enjoy for the beautiful scenery along the rails.

In Juneau, we did do a whale watching excursion on Akuke Bay. Within 5 minutes, we starting seeing multiple whales. Highly recommended. We booked these tours through the cruise line (HAL).

Happy Cruising!

The "standards" in Juneau are:
- the Mt. Roberts tramway - buy your ticket when you arrive if the weather is decent ($25 for an all-day pass)
- Mendenhall Glacier - take the shuttles buses that run from the dock for $7 each way
- whale watching - I've been out with Orca twice and had great trips ( http://www.orcaenterprises.com/ ) but there are many other operators

Or the city bus for a valley floor ride for hardly anything... Takes you to walking distance to the Glacier and the Alaskan Brewing Company :) (separate stops)

Sorry, Bob, but I wouldn't walk a mile each way along a fairly busy road without a very good reason (much better than saving $11).

That's exactly how I feel too Murry, I only put those "Inexpensive" options in there for those that might be looking for alternatives. I have seen folks get off the bus and do it but you won't catch me either. My favorite bus stop is the one at the prison gates :D Brings back old memories.
We did walk one time to the Brewery though for a hat and Tshirt for a realative.

Bus drivers are very friendly and helpful. Same as Bermuda actually. They make the young and healthy make way for the frail and elderly.
