What is everyones opinion on booking shore excursions through the ship verses finding your own excursions?

Personally, I'm more comfortable booking my excursions through the ship. From what I understand, if there are any mishaps, they make sure you get back to the ship on time. We were really close getting back from a trip to Dun's River Falls in Jamaica and we were assured that there was no worry, mon!

If you're traveling in the Caribbean, as I've done many times, I'd stick with the ship's excursions. They may be a bit more expensive, but in most cases, the difference is not that much. Of course, on a 7 day cruise, we may only book two excursions just to watch the budget. Hope this helps - have a great trip!

I typically book my own, just 'cause I'm always on a budget. You usually get the same thing for a lot less......

I have to agree with lizardstew that you get the same (if not better) for a lot less. I don't ever remember hearing any stories of people missing the ship's departure, although I'm sure there are some out there. Running late to getting back to the ship is like the stress you feel when you are running late to the airport and you are affraid you will miss your flight. But in the end, you get there. My advice is book your own. The excursion companies have too much to lose with bad press if they mess up. Book your own, save money and probably get a better excursion. Good luck and have fun.

If it is a port I am familiar and comfortable with, I prefer to book my own tours directly with the local tour operators. In the past I have found these tours to be much better and way cheaper than the ship tours.

However, if you are not comfortable in the area, or are worried about getting back to the ship on time, than for peace of mind go ahead and book the ship's tours. They are usually pretty good. I have only ever been disappointed once with a ship's tour (in MArtinique) and all the rest have been enjoyable.

You know, I never thought about it, but Stan is right about the bad press.....I plan on using independant tour operators in botn Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman, and I would only use operators who come highly recommended by the fine folks on this board. If I read a post stating that their tour got them back too late, there is no way I'd ever take that tour! Word of mouth goes a long way. If you need any help or recommendations, just let us know.....there will be someone on this board who has been there!

Has anyone done any scuba excursions in Cozumel and Grand Cayman that were not through the ship? How did that go? Any recommendations?

For Grand Cayman, because you are not in port that long I would book excursions through the ship. Also, you will have to tender in and by booking an early excursion (7AM as we did) you will get to be one of the first off the ship.
Cozumels stop is much longer so you should have plenty of time, plus you are at a pier.
(no tendering)
