If it is a port I am familiar and comfortable with, I prefer to book my own tours directly with the local tour operators. In the past I have found these tours to be much better and way cheaper than the ship tours.However, if you are not comfortable in the area, or are worried about getting back to the ship on time, than for peace of mind go ahead and book the ship's tours. They are usually pretty good. I have only ever been disappointed once with a ship's tour (in MArtinique) and all the rest have been enjoyable.
