We taking our son and daugher-in-law (mid-twenties) along with us and will be booking inside and balcony cabns in May.

The Caribbean Princess total is $400 less than Explorer.
We've cruised:
Celebrity - Millenium, Zenith
HAL - Rotterdam, Ryndam
NCL - Norway, Sun
RCCL - Explorer (and loved it) but have never cruised grand Princess class ship.

Any advice would be most welcome

We've been on the Voyager of the Seas & several other RCCL cruises, so I understand how you feel about the Explorer, that's just how we feel. We are also going on the Caribbean Princess in May - May 29th with our kids (17 & 14) & some friends. We sailed on the Grand Princess 2 years ago & enjoyed it very much. Our first choice was to go on the Navigator, but unfortunately, it had been chartered for the week of May 29th & we were very very disappointed. The Explorer didn't have any outside cabins available, so we opted for the Caribbean Princess. The only thing is that Princess tries to be the big ship with the small ship feel & that makes some of the lounges smaller. The problem is that since they offer Personal Choice dinning in addition to the early/late seating, they really can't control the flow of when people are going to the shows. That was the only drawback that we found. Other than that, Princess was very nice. It's still not a Voyager/Explorer/Navigator, but what is?
