Ferry to St. John from St. Thomas Questions

We're thinking of getting to St. John on our own from the cruise ship pier and have a few questions:

1. Where do you catch the ferry? Is it near the cruise ship pier in Charlotte Amalie?

2. Once at St. John, are there plenty of taxis to take you to the beaches? What would a taxi cost from St. John's pier to Trunk Bay?

3. We've been to Caneel Bay (via boat). Other than Trunk Bay, are there any other beaches that are less crowded than Trunk Bay?

4. Is there an official site for the ferry schedules?

Thanks so much for the help!! :thumb :wave :thumb

Only thing I can remember is the Ferry is at Red Hook. A taxi ride from the dock on the other side of the Island. Plenty of cabs but can't remember the cost to the beaches in St John.. Do a search for Red Hook Ferry and you should find a schedule.

Thanks so much! We've done a day sail out of Red Hook before, so I know where that is, guess I must've missed the ferries. I'll do a search - thanks!

St. Thomas to St. John ferry schedules can be found on a number of websites: www.vinow.com, www.usvi-on-line.com, probably others. There is actually a ferry that leaves Charlotte Amalie, as well as the one in Red Hook. The CA ferry takes a little longer, but from everything I've seen, it all ends up working out about equal to the Red Hook route... time wise as well as cost. You get to see the island from the water on the CA ferry, vs. seeing some of the countryside by car if you choose the Red Hook ferry. Those websites also include taxi fares from Cruz Bay to the St. John beaches. I would also recommend Solomon and Honeymoon beaches in St. John, which can only be reached on foot - about a 20-30 minutes scenic hike from the ferry dock. This saves you the cost of the taxi, and these are beautiful, uncrowded beaches with excellent snorkeling. But even though Trunk Bay is the most visited beach, I've never seen it just over running with tourists. Its a long beach, and there are always places plop down if you move down the beach a little. And it is spectacular. Of course, ALL of the beaches on St. John are spectacular, so you really can't go wrong! Have fun!!

Thanks so much, 2Feathers! I bookmarked both websites and will take a closer look in a few minutes.

Good to hear that there is a ferry right from Charlotte A. instead of having to taxi over to Red Hook.

We went to Honeymoon Beach on our daysail and swam to shore there. We might just go for Trunk Bay this time though, since it sounds like it won't be as packed as I thought it would be. We're early risers so we'll plan to get there ASAP, hopefully before all the other people.

Thanks again for the help! :thumb
