Hi all.....stopping at St. Thomas on an upcoming cruise...curious as to anyone's experiences with going to St. John on your own....Ferry from Red Hook vs from where the ship docks....Any tips?? Suggestions?? I've been to St. Thomas twice and haven't ventured there....I've heard great things about St. John and want to see for myself...

We did it in March of this year and loved it. We took the ferry from Red Hook and then a taxi to Cinnamon Beach. The beach is free and beautiful. We headed back to Cruz Bay for a little shopping before the ferry trip back. (It as a great place to buy spices for grilling!) It rained on our ferry ride back to Red Hook and thought we were going to freeze as we were on the top level. Other than that, we had a great trip.

Katie, do a 90 day search on this site, all forums, for Trunk Bay Ferry. You'll find some posts dealing with your question. You can find the ferry time schedule on their site because I think it only leaves every half hour. Also, one hint. Hubby and I were all set to do this excursion and were waiting for the ship to clear customs (St. John being a US Virgin Island and we had been to other non-US ports). It was never announced that we could disembark and our timetable was so screwed up that we missed the early ferry! We would up going to Maegen's Bay instead.

We just did this last week. We had to take a taxi from the ship to red hook dock - I think it was $6 per person, then the ferry was $3 or $4 per person and leaves every hour on the hour, then when we reached St. John, another taxi to Trunk Bay was another $6 per person. And the same prices on the way back. I think each taxi and ferry was about a 20 min ride. It was well worth it, but we didn't get to see any of St. Thomas because this took all of our time, and we did have to go thru immigration before we got off the ship, which took an extra 45 min. We arrived at Trunk Bay about 12:30. Our port time was arriving in St. Thomas at 10 am and leaving at 8 pm, and had to be back on the ship at 7:30pm. We left Trunk Bay by taxi at about 4:30 to be able to catch the 5pm ferry. The ferry is very crowded this time of day as all the locals are getting off work and going back to St. Thomas.

St. John is so beautiful, and I recommend getting a driver to tour the island for you and stop at all the scenic stops. We just went to Trunk Bay, where due to immigration and pouring rain we didn't get there till 1:30, and found it very crowded. We asked the driver on the way back to slow down and stop, but he just flew back, going 70 mph on those curvy roads. I also would try another beach on st John next time, maybe Hawksnest. It looked equally pretty and a lot less crowded (and would be free).

While on Trunk Bay, me husband climbed up to the right of the beach, towards a water tour, and got an incredible view and photos.
