First night open seating?

From what I have read on this board, and others, it appears that the first night aboard is open seating at dinner. Does anyone know if this is always the case, or does it vary depending on the departure time, or the initial departure port ? (ie Europe vs Carribean)

Thanks.

Have only cruised Celebrity twice, but both times we ate at the assigned table in the main dinning room on the first night. On the last one (Summit - October 2002) we were allowed to attend in any type clothing as there was a massive delay in receiving baggage.

The only times I have had open seating on the first night were late departures--ie 11pm when sailing from San Juan. Never when its a 4 or 5 pm sailing.

Have sailed Celebrity 12 times and the only time there was open seating for dinner was the evening we left Seward, Alaska - and that was because it was a late departure and passengers were still arriving from Anchorage.

When we sailed from Honolulu in September we sat at our assigned table. Our sailaway time was 11:59pm--(guess thay wanted to count that as day one!) We did have muster drill before early dinner seating so I don't know what the late ariving passengers did for that. On Celebrity we have never had open seating for first night dinner.

My advise to you is to make sure you show up early for your table because if you are late or don't show up the first night you WILL LOSE your assigned table and end up with a bunch of nice and boring people. That is what happened to us. I was assigned a large table for 8 persons. We ended up with 3 nice ladies who didn't speak much English. It was kind of boring.
